Frontline-Plus flea killer Question

I have a dog that weighs around 45 pounds. He has fleas.

WallyWorld offers Frontline for $39.77, no matter the size of dog for three treatments.

So, since my dog weighs in at 45 Lbs. It would equal 3 treatments for a total of $39.77 for his weight class.

But....if I bought the treatment level for dogs ranged in size of twice his weight...why couldn't I just cut the dosage in half and get a 6 month treatment instead of the 3 month treatment for the same price of $39.77.

That never occurred to me. Of course these are little vials of liquid which you would need to guess at using only half of each time then seal the rest up for a month.

This year I, er, my dog has had a lot of flea problems even using Frontline monthly. I've resorted to sprays too. I found a product called Drop Dead at the Dollar Tree store for $1 (5oz bottle). It seems to work. A few squirts every 2 or 3 days as soon as I see him scratching.

Link below to the spray--although Amazon wants a lot more than Dollar Tree.

We have been doing exactly what you speak of for about five
years.

No problems yet.

Ours is a house dog and we have also been able to skip dosing
him in the winter months.

We have been using Pet Armor (generic Frontline). It seems to work fine on our dog. We also dust our dog with food grade diatomaceous earth. It HAS to be food grade, not the stuff that goes in swimming pool filters. You can also put a tiny amount in their food to kill intestinal worms. For skin and fur health you can add coconut oil to their food.

For a natural way, just add apple cider vinegar to their drinking water. 1/4 cup per gallon.

Greg1959,
I hope you read the labels on any flea tick killers, it is a pesticide and is not good for people or children. What surprises me is people never think twice about dumping that junk on their pets. It kills the dogs immune system, and once its gone it's gone and won't come back. Most of these products also can cause cancer in animals, so the question is,what is the best alternative. I bet there are multiple things naturally that will get rid of fleas, ticks etc without harming the family pet. Garlic is one I know and can attest to for family dog, ticks can't handle the smell and fleas can't tolerate it either. Food grade diamateceous earth is a great alternative also. Boil some fresh liver in Garlic, put it in a dehydrator, give that to your pet for treats. It will rid them of these pests. Also make a garlic spray you mix with water and spray the yard with it.It works and we use it,no ticks, fleas and no mosquito's all spring and summer and into the fall. Frontline will never touch our dog,but it is our choice and we have found natural ways to rid of pests, found a lot of this out from local breeder where we got Jake.We also carry insurance policy on him,for our peace of mind. Google Frontline Poison,Advantix etc. they cause more problems than they solve.

I use Sentinal as a heartworm and other worm med. It also disrupts the fleas life cycle of reproducing. Might want to check with your vet. Pills are around 7-8 dollars a piece. No contact with poisons.

Used to have a Malamute who was a great big flea trap. Sprays would never go through that heavy double coat. We would just shove him into a large garbage bag and pull it up around his head and then spray into the bag. Held him there for several minutes. Then we would carefully spray or wipe the spray on his head. Did this before giving him any other treatment.

Did the same thing with the cats. That could be a little more dangerous when dealing with claws.

I would get the 3 individual treatments.

Here is a very interesting fact that we found out. My Wife is religious about keeping our 3 farm/house dogs flea free. She started buying Frontline off of Ebay because it was cheaper. We finally noticed the dogs had fleas and we could not get rid of them. I even sprayed malathion heavy everywhere outside.

Turns out the Frontline on Ebay, even though it was in the correct package and looked identical was fake. My wife got in contact with Frontline and gave them the Lot Number on the boxes and Frontline told her they were not their numbers.

Went to the Vet and bought the correct Frontline and the fleas were gone in a very short time. This was all summer last year and have not had a flea on a dog since, that either of us have ever seen. Two little Jack Russells and a English Pointer. I would assume WalMart to have the real stuff. Good luck - Bob

Next time you are at the Vet ask him about
Comfortis. Its in a chewable tablet. Starts killing
fleas in 30 min and last for 30 days. You have to
get it from the vet or get him to write a
prescription.

If you want to get rid of all the fleas on the dog fast and easy, look for a product called CapStar. It's a tablet, give it to the critter and within half hour the fleas will start dropping off. It only kills adult fleas though, so you still need to address the eggs and the source of the infestation. But it clears up the immediate problem really well.

You can get a generic of this and its much less expensive.

Google "nitenpyram".

I get it from littlecitydogs.com

It is very effective, but as you said, kills adults only.

You can re-treat as frequently as every 24 hrs.

At the farm, I usually treat every week for at least 4 weeks.

In Dallas, we used to have a terrible flea problem. Last year I sprayed beneficial nematodes. This year, not a single flea. Much better than using pesticides and giving stuff to your animals.

This is usually a liquid, so giving a partial dose would be difficult.

Nitenpyram (Capstar) is effective, but only kills adults and you would need to treat at least once a week for a minimum of 4 weeks.

Our place in Dallas used to have a terrible flea problem. Last year I sprayed the yard with beneficial nematodes and we didn't have a single flea this year. The only problem is, once you do that you can't use pesticides on the yard or you kill the nematodes.

With pesticides and Frontline, you have to re-treat periodically during the flea season. I haven't had to do anything to the yard or my dog this year.

I bought them through jeffersequine.com. Its called "ANTidote". Look under flea control. Costs $26.00 to treat 1/4 acre and you don't have to re-treat.

The ad says it kills ants, but I didn't find it effective on ants, but sure kicks b*** on fleas!
