Aeration of Beans in Bin

When you run air on stored beans, do you leave the air on all the time or do you turn the fan off at night? The first beans I cut a couple of weeks ago were 12% with green beans mixed in. I cut 2 wagons this afternoon that were 14 1/2%. Going to dump them in the 18' bin with aeration floor and a 12" fan and blow air on them to dry the rest of the way. I figure that the temp drops at night and the humidity goes up, so you are blowing wet air into the beans. How do you all do this?? Chris

I would keep the air moving on them. Typically the grain is warmer than the outside air at night. This will make the bin "sweat" if no air is moving. Corn is more challenging than beans to dry. Don't get the beans too dry as this will bring the test weight down and cost as much as a moisture dock charge at the elevator.

Do some web searching for extention bulletins on drying. You'll learn there are a lot of variables... but I'd recommend keeping the fan on, unless it is raining. How long to dry will depend a lot on weather, as well as your fan, and how deep the grain.

Good luck.

We just came in from putting 16 beans in the bin. The fan is on just turn it off in a big rain. Check them every day. Will dry sooner than you think. We do have a 5 hp 24 in fan on a 18 ft bin. blows pretty hard.

When needed I run small aeration fans in sunshine only on 15 and below beans.

I feel you loose all you gain running at night.

The green beans will cause more problems than the 14.5 beans.

I lost 20,000bu of corn, back in 1983. I was afraid to run the fan in the rain. All the "experts" later told me to start the air and leave it on.
I think it rain everyday that spring.

Just because it is raining, does not mean the air is at 100% humidity. It can also be at 60%. Likewise, the air can be at 100% humidity and it's not raining.

So, the best thing to do is run the fans continuously until the beans are at the desired moisture. It's hard to ADD moisture to grain by running the fans.
