Ebola and Farm Animals

I see the CDC has a dog under quarentine that was
exposed to Ebola Virus so I guess dogs can catch it.Does anyone know if other animals can catch it? It'd be a real problem if they can.

Didn't they put a dog down in Spain? They probably got a bunch of lab rats loaded up by now. Just thinking about the nnalert for small pox that came from cattle and polio I think came from chimps. Maybe a new farming venture raising critters for vaccines

Google Ebola. It started in the 70's with bats, went to chimps before going to humans. So, who knows what's next?

Last night on news, they said there wasn't enough money for drug companies to think they could make a profit to make a nnalert. Only government money was available, which was set at a fixed amount. Because of inflation they said that fixed amount was like 21% less buying power in today’s money.

Perhaps if enough people and animals die, drug companies may see a way to make a profit.

Animals can get ebola. Some species will succumb some will end up as carriers. Don't think I will get all worried at this point.

Not sure I follow your logic. The venerable CDC put a dog in quarantine, therefore it must be able to get Ebola? My memory has it that they stated they did not know if it could get the disease. It was going to be put down just to be safe. Feelings ran high that the poor human victim should not have to deal with the possibility that she was responsible for the death of her dog. Apparently it does not matter that she exposed a couple hundred humans from Texas to Ohio and back. I am not a panic monger, but i DO think we need to quarantine the victims AND the caregivers for a safe amount of time. Letting this idgit walk out of an Ebola sickroom and get on an aircraft is really irresponsible.

I went to my doc the other day for a routine visit, and I mentioned that the drug companies wouldn't be interested in finding a nnalert for ebola because there's no money in Africa. No money - no interest. He said that Canada is real close to developing a nnalert - should be the first to get one up and running. If we can scare enough people in the US, I guess the drug companies will have an incentive, but until then. . .

There's a lot of hype about it, in my opinion. I know it's serious, but 24 hours a day news coverage?

According to what I saw on the news (take that for what it is worth) dogs are carriers for ebola and show no symptoms of the disease.

We have all heard and read on the news how Ebola is spread. If it gets to the USA it will likely be spread by the poor hygiene of our population.

Next time you are in a public restroom watch the number of guys that walk out of the stall and straight out the door. Must be close to 50%.

No wash, no rinse, no soap, and now there are blowers, so no towels to insulate your own hands from the hands of these slobs. Not sure if women are as bad.

Not a pleasant thought. Glad I was raised by parents that valued cleanliness.

Definitely too much hyp and blaming the president for it. Just like Katrina was another president's fault.

Do not worry bleeding hearts like Bill Gates will fund the vaccines for foreign countries. At least the guy is doing something productive with his money. I read that Bill Gates fronted up the money to vaccinate a lot of kids in Africa.

Is the glass half full or half empty? If Gates doesn't do something with his wealth, when he dies Uncle Sam will get most of it. Look what happens when kids inherit money or become rich and famous. So, who will do the most good with the money, Gates, his kids, or Sam?

He has the power to stop flights out of the countries that have ebola. He's not even concerned enough to do that. Of course the UN's Agenda 21 calls for the elimination of 2/3's of the population of the world. So, hey, who are we to judge their actions, huh?

I don't know about animals and I do think that everyone should take precautions just like trying to avoid the flu. There are a few things we know at this time: the only one that has died from it in the US caught it in Africa. The 2 people that caught it in the US were in close contact with the victim and his body fluids. The media is in 'terrify the multitudes mode'. It makes me think that they are trying to take the focus from something else??

And then you grab the door handle on the way out and re-"infect" yourself and then put your hands right back on the shopping cart handle. Washing after you pee is about the least of your worries.

He has no power to stop flights out of the affected countries. He may have some power to stop flights coming into this country, but you'd have to stop them all. The guy that dies in TX didn't come here on a flight from Africa, he came on a flight from Belgium. He did that because you already can't readily get a direct flight from W Africa to here. So what are you going to do, stop all air traffic? Best answer is to monitor people who are traveling from the area and beef up the effort to fight the disease at the source.

I have heard of the Canadian effort to create a nnalert, and that that might be available as soon as the first of the year.

Thanks for exlaining it so graphically. Those slobs deposit a little bit of their pee and crap
(and germs) on the door handles and shopping carts, without regard for others.

hose "slobs" most likely don't get sick very often. They are immune to 90% of the common bugs out there..
How about you though???

Should we seal the border of Texas and stop flights out of there?

The president cannot stop all flights out of the ebola countries. Just the ones coming to the USA.

That's simple each country has their own passports so sorting out where they're from is easy and individuals have to apply for a visa to get here if they don't have the visa they can't come.
Even other countries in Africa are denying the people from the Ebola countries entry. That one guy has cost the US Millions$.

I was taught not to pee on my hands Edd, same for the other. You make it sound like its common to do that.

The average shopping cart handle is supposed to be the filthiest thing you commonly touch.

(quoted from post at 22:42:17 10/19/14) How about your 80 year old mother or your 4 year old grand son?

What would anyones 4 year old be doing in west Africa, much less their 80 yoa mother?
