Church down the street lost tree . didn't have saw big enough so asked if buddy and me could finish it off and haul away . They paid tree company $2500 to drop it . 60 inches across and 190 rings

Seems like a lot of money to fell a tree, but with the size, liability and all that a tree service has in risk......

My friend had a huge black cherry taken down, not too far from his house, was a few hundred, it was 4' in diameter, he had most of it milled for lumber, I have a section of the trunk for a table, I guess this is where the vertical position on a log splitter shines, if making firewood, those rounds are just not going up onto the beam, maybe 1/3rd LOL !

What kind of tree was it, and what killed it disease, age, storm ?

Our church has 2 large silver maples that are
causing problems and need to come down. Were there
when I was little but the time has come. Don't
know where we would come up with that kind of
money though.

It was an Oak . We had pretty bad storms this summer. tornado path close by and bad winds , took down a bunch of trees . This one lost a big branch and with houses close they decided to take it down before it hit something . It did have a rotted area in the middle of it . HAd to 1/4 the rounds before my little skidloader could even lift them . no shortage of firewood this year .

Get several quotes when dealing with felling trees. Son got prices varying from $900 to $4,000 to fell the same tree. The $900 guy did as good a job as anyone else would.

Yeah--I had estimates made for TRIMMING/TOPPING a healthy four foot diameter tree about 20 foot from my home with limbs growing over house.
Beautiful important shade tree, so I didn't want to take it down--although I probably should have.
Anyway, estimate to just cut limbs and no cleanup, ranged from $350.00 to $900.00!
A four companies were licensed and bonded except the one that wanted $900.00!!!

I can imagine, oak is dense and heavy, not sure it would dry down to be ready to burn this year, but it is certainly great firewood. Just blocking and quartering must have been some work. I marvel a the old trees, but there comes a time when near buildings. We have one oak of that size, but the center is hollow, property corner, some day it too will provide a huge pile of firewood, but I would not want to be near it when it goes down, several huge limbs came off it a few years back, I towed those in for firewood, but they are some interesting pieces, I am going to try and mill them somehow, lot of burl, I've got to at least get something out of it that I can use to make something, old trees sure are remarkable.

my dad and I went around my cottonwoods and the
biggest one is 17plus feet around at 4feet off the
ground --we guess it might push 120 feet up to the
top -- them cottonwood trees made my lawn white with
cotton this year ( big crop) this is in northwest
Iowa

I had a big White Oak tree on my property which over
hanging over the township cemetery and dropping dead
branches in the cemetery. Talked to a logger in the
area and he paid ME. Saved a bundle on that one.

Time was, if you wanted to take a tree down, you just took it down. Nowadays, it's a whole different ball game. I lost a huge limb off an oak about three years ago and since it was then heavy on the side near the power line, the power company had one of their contractors take it down. I was a little surprised at how they did it. They used a bucket and removed all the limbs, then the man used a saw with about a 20" bar to cut down the four foot diameter trunk. I was expecting to see one of those monster saws with about a four or five foot bar and chain.
