Today's Tip of the Day

Simple Fix #2 - Dies when warmed up - When the
tractor warms up it unceremoniously dies with
no spark. The spark does not come back till the
tractor cools down. This is commonly a bad
condensor. Since testing condensors appears to
be a lost art, it is simplest to replace them.

HAHA! Guess what problem has been nagging me
with my Ford 4600SU for about 4 years. I just
bought a new ignition coil today because the
tractor finally would not fire at all and I
traced it to no spark. Intermittent problems
are the worst!

Do not know you since you appear to be a newer guy here. Coils do not go bad often but yes they do and when they do often times they do odd things like work well for say and hour then you get a hit and miss thing then dead till the coil cools off again. BTDT many times and have even seen them explode

I am new to Yesterday's Tractors. Probably should be posting here more since my tractors are from way back. The tractor dying mysteriously at random times, especially when I am far from the barn only to start again later, is exasperating! I hope replacing the coil is the solution. I am not 100% certain yet.

BTW hi neighbor. I am over by El Dorado Springs, MO. I see you are in Lake of the Ozarks. I live in San Jose, CA now but visit from time to time.

One of my uncles 21A Massey combines started doing that. We replaced all the parts in the distributor but that did not solve the problem.

Finally my Dad got a new battery and installed it - and that solved the problem!

Exploding coil! I haven't even thought about that in years, but yes I have seen it. Never actually witnessed it happen, but seen the results!

Just one more thing to be aware of, especially doing 12v conversions. A 6v coil wired to 12v, points closed or improperly wired, ignition left on... Wouldn't want to have my face near one when it blew!

Well I can't say that I have had many coils go bad on me like Young Fella Old has, but I did have one go some fifteen years ago. It would run till it warmed up then die, then start again after cooling off. After checking everything else I tried a new coil and that fixed it.

New one for me yesterday. Neighbors Farmall BN dies under load, typical lack of fuel problem. Sure enough, no flow at the carb. Finally traced the problem. Darn Asian lady bug got into the gas tank and covered most of the sediment bowl opening. Yep, the screen in the tank has been gone for about 20 years that I know of or it wouldn't have happened.

I am happy to report that Blue Bill the Tractor is humming. New coil is on from Golden Valley tractor in Clinton, MO. So is three new, gapped spark plugs. Never has it idled so smooth and slow. Should have done it years ago. Weirdest problem I have ever encountered.

Ive seen one coil explode. It was 45 years ago in farm mechanics school. Six volt tar filled coil hooked up to 12 volts. Switch was left on with engine not running for awhile. He hit the starter and BANG! A cloud of blue smoke rose to the ceiling and the guts of the coil were sticking six niches out the top of the coil. Made a nice display of what the inside of a coil looks like.
