Rick, Great pics. Been a while since I was down there.
People from other states don't realize that most of the state is rural. They seem to think of shyscrapers and the former Twin Towers.
For all of you YTr's not familiar with NY., you will always notice that we say upstate or central NY. etc. None of us north of NYC want anything to do with the city. Wish we could become our own state seperate from the city.

I have added a link I found that shows the proposed bridge but as far as I know it isn't cast in stone yet. I was talking with an engineer downstate a few years ago and he said even at 5 mph over the current bridge, he could feel it sway from side to side...not a good thing...........

Amen to that Loren.

Been three attempts that I am aware of to rid ourselves of that rat hole city, but none of them really got anywhere. One of those attempts was quite recent.

Very few outsiders realize what a vast and beautiful State NY is.

We have the same problem in Louisiana: everybody who visits New Orleans thinks they've seen the essence of Louisiana. Not! New Orleans is New Orleans, its own thing. It's not Cajun, either; the Cajuns happily live a hundred or so miles to the west. North Louisiana is a third culture, altogether different from New Orleans and Acadiana.

Yes indeed,it sure is nice up here but it won't stay this way if we keep on telling the world just how nice it is!
As for NYC and the rest of the state becoming seperate entaties, many of us would love to see it happen but there is almost no chance of it.When I lived on eastern Long Island much was said of the "East End" becoming Peconic county, seperate from Suffolk county.Didn't happen. The East End is another beautyful part of the state.
People just don't know what is involved in a state or county becoming seperated or broken up.

Loren,

Living on the east coast of Florida, I meet a lot of folks from New York. I've found it amusing that when I ask someone where they're from, they'll say, "New York" and very quickly add, "Upstate".

It's also interesting to see the differences in population on the east coast versus the west coast of Florida. I-95 comes down from the east coast, and I-75 comes down from the Midwest.

At first I thought it was Ausable Chasm. Just as pretty as I remember from the only time I was at the chasm.
Another area I used to go to was Ithaca.
As others have said about becoming seperate from NYC, the reason I remember we are not is that THEY can't survive without OUR tax dollars.

WOW! What great pictures. You are correct, lots of folks see the Outer Banks and think they've seen NC. We also have the Blue Ridge Mountains and everything in between. Thanks for sharing your photos.

Hey BA where you live in North Carolina. I live in Denver little town around Lake Norman Its about 25 miles north of Charlotte

I live about a hour north of Letchworth and we try to get down at least once per year. Its a great place for scenery all year round but fall is the best. Next time anyone is there go over to the east side and walk the trail that used to be a canal/railroad. There are parts of it so close to the edge that if you stand on the old tow path you can look straight down to the bottom. It took some serious guts to build that. For all you guys outside New York, come visit - we need you tax dollars to support our welfare system. We've to some pretty good old tractors too.

Beautiful place. When I first saw your photos I thought it was Whetstone Gulf state park in Lewis County, central NY. Looks very similar. NY is a beautiful state. Too bad politics have made it a miserable place to live.

Yup........Letchworth Park.....google maps...type in 14517 for zip and you will see it on the left..Genesee River goes through it...by the way..the Genesee is one of like 3 rivers worldwide that runs North............

It's gonna happen in the next year. I want to get down and look at the old bridge one last time. Norfolk Southern offered the old one to NYS and the state turned it down presumably due to liability.

You got to be kidding me. Having been born and raised in the midwest, I thought the only thing in New York state was New York city. That is all we ever hear about.

I wish NYC had kept its original name of "New Amsterdam." It would of made things much less confusing for the 99% of the state that has nothing to do with the "Big Apple" sewer at the bottom. Even though NYC is way at the bottom, the state government is run by NYC wackos. Also - NYC gets all its drinking water from rural and and more northern areas. 2000 square miles of rural watershed. A bunch of reservoirs all piped underground. So even 150 miles north - there are New York City water police running around.

Years ago when I was working I made many business trips to Rochester. One weekend I visited Letchworth. These photos bring back good memories. It is a beautiful place indeed. Thank you.

As a native New Yorker, I am constantly annoyed with the term "Upstate New York" every little town has a name and a location, I'm from Oneida, 250 miles away from NYC, there is a whole variety of beautiful land, hills, mountains, and valleys to see all over the state. The news media can only comprehend NYC or "upstate." Thanks for the pictures, they are great.

We are in Pa, about 60 miles south of Erie. This looks like a good day trip on the motorcycle, when the weather warms up.

Thanks
Rich

To all that don't know how large and diversified NY is. The Adirondak Park is the largest Park in the contiguous United States. The park covers some 6.1 million acres (2.5×106 ha), a land area roughly the size of Vermont and greater than the National Parks of Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Glacier, and Great Smoky Mountains combined. And that is only one park.

As far as I'm concerned, "Upstate" is that area encompassing the bedroom area for NYC- ie- where nnalert lived. Orange, Rockland, Putnam, Westchester counties up into the Tappan Zee area. Then you have the Catskills and then the Capitol District. After that it's the Adirondacks and Northern, Central and Western NY. The people from north of the Catskills, outside the few urban areas like Albany, Syracuse, Buffalo and Rochester, have so little in common with the south part of the state it's just not funny.

I agree with Loren, take the area south of the Tappan Zee, or Albany and south for that matter, and make it a different state. Move the captiol to Syracuse or some small town like Dryden or Adams and lets be the rural state we are. I'd rather be poor and cut off from NYC than ruled by a bunch of condo dwelling city boys that never had manure on their Guccis.
