I started my MF 203 that has sat for a couple years today. It started right up. It had a strange noise coming from somewhere. After a while I discovered my starter was still spinning. I guess the bendix stuck. It was hot, but still works. A few years ago I had a start switch on my MF 231 not going all the way to the off position after starting. The starter kept running, and burned itself up. The starter never worked again. Stan

(quoted from post at 23:34:34 10/15/14) little bit of lube inside the bendix cured mine.

You were lucky. Conventional wisdom is to not lube them, but of course graphite should be a good way to do it.

My 85 Ford diesel pickup did that a few weeks ago. I pulled in to a field and shut it off and the starter was still spinning. That one starts hard and the bolt on the solenoid gets hot. That one got hot enough for the cable to loosen up and turn so the lug on the end of it was touching the exciter wire.

We had a Bosch starter not disengage on a combine and the armature grenaded. The commutator blocks flew out and pretty much tore up the brush end of the starter.

I had that happen to my MF 35 diesel last year. Put in a good battery and worked fine after that.

I keep a wrench under the front seat of my 88 f150 for that.

Everynow and then I start it and the solenoid sticks.

Makes a god-awful noise.

I just pop the hood, tap the solenoid with the wrench, and I'm on my way.

I tried a new solenoid, but it still happens.

I think the problem is a weak connection somewhere in the circuit causing a large current draw and kind welding the solenoid contacts.

Just haven't had the time to go any deeper on it - the wrench works fine.
