We're going deep freezer shopping tomorrow, looking for a mid sized one to freeze veggies in. What is your recommendation. This thing will probably not be used year round. Our 28 cube (I think) freezer is full to the brim and the garden veggies and apples are still coming in. jim

Jim, you know you are going to get as many different recommendations as you get answers. Because everyone has one that has given great service, and most have had one that was a dud. Several years ago we needed a small unit and purchased one at Lowe's Home Improvement, but I can't remember what the brand name is, and it isn't in this house, but it was the lowest priced brand that they sold, and it has given service for about 15 years. Only thing, it is a small unit and did not have any baskets in it, which is something you may want to consider.

Yeah, I knew this would open a can of worms. I just don't know what to buy anymore. I used to like Amana but we all know what happened to them along with the rest of the name brands. Service isn't as much of a selling point anymore because most of the new ones are throw aways. The more years of service I get out of it before throwing it away the better. Jim

We bought a brand new, 2 door GE Fridge/Freezer at Home Depot this spring... It is the biggest POS I have ever seen in an appliance.

It runs 24/7, and it has a terrible ice maker/dispenser. We have had to have warranty work done to it 3 times already, and it was all the SAME dam part because it failed 3 TIMES!!!

Not impressed at all, like the old school Maytag that we had... Got 25 years out of it!

The new ones will have better insulation but smaller on the inside.(2015 models) Grab a copy of "Consumer Reports" book at any book stores Walmart,Target etc. They will tell you what they found as best, and the worst.

Jim

Not gonna recommend brands as I am clueless on that
front.

Will offer up a local dealer we have been VERY happy
with service. Seiler appliance in Pocahontas I
think has always steered us in the right direction. Oh yeah they also have been very good about service following the sale.

Consumer's Report has a quick index in the back of every issue to find which issue you want to look at. Consumer's Report is also available in almost every public library.

I hate our up rights. If something slips & falls againist the door inside ,the door will open a bit. Not good.If you do buy an upright, make sure you don't put very much in it or wrap a chain around it & put a boomer on it. Yes my wife tends ot over fill the freezers

I know times change and so does the quality of products made. With that being said, I purchased a upright at Sears 38 years ago. As long as I got power its always running. It hasn't missed a beat.

Stay away from the box stores and home centers. Go to a local business that not only sells appliances, but also services them. The repair people will know which brands to stay away from. For what it's worth, the brand that gives the least amount of trouble will most likely be a brand that does not fall under the Whirlpool umbrella.

We bought a Frigidaire upright this past March from Sears. Hal
PS; They had to remove the freezer door and basement door. Very good men that delivered it. We also got a rebate of $150.00 on the old freezer in the mail.

A few years back we bought a Kenmore (I guess it was actually 10 years ago). Our other freezer isn't that old either - only 17 years (Amana). They both seem new after growing up with the IH freezers from the 40s my mom had in the basement.

Both have held up well considering they spent a few years in a house that had a grounding issue. Most of the other electrical items from that period died (TVs, VCRs, DVD players, Washer and Dryer). I bought them based on the big and simple theory. Get as much capacity as you can while keeping the options to a minimum so there is less to go wrong.

This won't help you, but thought I would share.

I still have the chest style freezer my parents had. Brand name is "Deep Freeze". It ran for nearly 60 yrs until the mice got the wiring.

Thank you for the suggestions. We ended up with a Frigidaire partly because our other freezer is Frigidaire and this one came from the same dealer. It cost a twitch less than the competition and being American made gives us a warm fuzzy feeling.

We aren't out of the woods yet though because of the amp load. It's in an attached garage built in 1967, with one 20 amp circuit for the whole garage and this circuit comes out of a breaker in the house that shares some household load too. The big freezer is on this circuit also, and the new freezer pulls 5 amps. The only other load in the garage besides the freezers is three lights and a door opener. An electrician might be paying us a visit. Another example of how a purchase like this can snowball. Jim

Nancy, Deep Freeze was / is a good brand. My parents bought a new one in 1948 when rural electric came to our part of North Dakota.

This little chest type freezer still functions perfectly as it has for 66 years. I have replaced the lid seal and latch, but the refrigeration stuff still works fine with no service.
By the way, the price sticker is still on the underside of the lid.
It cost $424.50 in 1948,just a bit more than $4000 in 2014 dollars as told by an inflation calculator.
Quality is not cheap, how many would pay $4000+ for a little white 12 cubic ft chest freezer today, even if they suspected it might function for 70 years ??
