Well I'm curious how it is elsewhere, as its been dry here for 2 years or so, no need to rehash why, but I've waited, looked when I could for Federal .308 150 grain in power shok, and .22 WMR, obviously rim fire is still a problem now.

So as usual, I reluctantly went into the Walmart I can see from the kitchen window, (used to be an ag field) looking for a boot dryer, checked the ammo case, and eureka, 2 boxes of the above .308, its been years since I got it off the shelf there. No boot dryer though, and no rimfire. Did see most calibers in stock though.

Today I went to Dick's sporting goods, to get a boot dryer, finally.. will have dry shoes, on the inside, darned things just don't dry out at night, even with the insert out. So I check the ammo counter and aisle, plenty of hunting ammo, lots of 30-06. Finally, they had .22 WMR !!! No limit on it, but I did not hoard, got what I needed, enough for quite some time, now I can sight that darned thing in and not worry about what I used, it' mainly for woodchucks anyway.

Has it come back in your area ?

I always think back when you just went to the store, the gun shop, got what you needed to have on hand, knowing its always there, still hard to believe, this situation, thankfully its improved a little.

Finding .22WMR in this area (Northern In.) but .380's have dried up again. Was in Indy a few weeks back and picked up 2,000 rounds of .22 long rifle for $24.95 for a 500 round brick of Remington Thunder Bolts.

Around me the rimfire stuff is still hard to come by. It's not as bad as it was for a while, when none at all could be found, but now it's the smaller packs of the 'good stuff' that's about all I see. The cheap bricks of target ammo haven't been seen on the retail shelves for a long time. About the only place they are available is if you are willing, stupid, or desperate enough to pay a 300 to 400% markup from some sorry individual who bought every brick that hit the shelf for standard retail, and decided to make a buck off the suckers in the world.

As far as center fire stuff, our local WalMarts, and other gun/ammo stores seem to be well blessed with just about anything you want.

The only better way to get anything you want is to hit your local gun shows. I can easily buy 500 to 1000 rounds, or more, of 7.62 x 39 to feed my SKS and my AK's, or anything else I might need to feed my other 'hunting' rifles, usually for about the same, or less than any of the other stores.
A year or so ago that was a near impossibility. Or should I say that IF they had the ammo, it was so high priced you couldn't afford to buy it, even if they had it.

Now if the 22 LR would just get back to normal...it would sure make our family time spent together shooting a whole lot cheaper.......

No problem getting the large stuff around this part of Virginia, but the 22's are not to be found. Ran across some off brand made in Mexico for crazy prices. "Aguila Ammo" It makes me want to punch some hoarder in the face.

I was in Fleet Farm on Sunday to get a new muffker for my tractor. Cruised by the gun section to check prices on a .243 girl gun for the wife. A couple of guys talking with the sales guy there so I stopped and listened to their conversation.
No .22 in stock. They got a shipment in last week but it sold out overnight.

Aguila is better quality than most of the US made stuff.

Plenty of ammo here in western, pa. Dicks/Dunhams/Walmart/Kmart/ and everty little shop around.

I haven't had a problem finding any Ammo.
Mainly because I haven't tried too. I had
won a Mossberg 500 on a raffle, once I seen
it in the box I decided I wasn't bringing
that POS Home & I already owned 4 12 Gauges.
So I took AMMO & Reloading instead of the gun.
This was awhile befor shortage seemed to be the
talk of the town. I already had a Brick of 22's
But they had two bricks at the time & I picked
up both of them, 200 rounds 150 30 cal. grain
bullets, 100 round for the 243, 100 for 270.
3 or 4 pounds of powder & 1000 primers... I think
I picked up Muzzle loader stuff in exchange for
a shot gun that looked like a old fence post..
One time in my Life I made the right move.....

The one upside to this self-perpetuating .22LR shortage is, if there is ever a zombie apocalypse and you're one of the lucky few to survive, .22LR will be *EASY* to find.

There will be tens of thousands of rounds stockpiled in each of millions of homes.

We have a good stock of what we need, except for .22LR... I would love to buy 7 or 8 bricks, but we can't even find the 20 packs or what ever the little boxes are....

WE have:

Big R (now North 40 Outfitters)
Wrenco Arms (private)
Walmart (haven't tried them)
Arm Surplus (private)

and a few other little places, and they are all wiped out! Now, I understand that I live out in the woods to start with, but every one I know shoots an 30.06, 12, 44 mag for "fun", they real guns are at home!

Can you buy ammunition online? I am going to try looking around right now...

Heyseed,I think Ive got a brick of 22s in my closet,Ill never use,If we ever run into each other there yours,I think I have a brick, not sure

Local Wal-Mart finally has some .223. 30-30, 30-06 and .308. For some reason they were always able to keep .45 ACP and 9MM in stock. I haven't seen a box of .22 or .380 ammo on their shelves in 3 years.

Local gun dealer that I go to had .22 in stock the entire time - at times it was nasty Russian ammo in yellow boxes with lots of wax in the boxes, other times it was some good CCI.

Massive numbers of AR15s on everyone's shelves and pricing on them has gone back to "normal" but no great deals out there yet. I bought a couple DPMS flat tops with collapsible stocks for $569 just before the 2008 elections. Currently the "cheap" ones are in the $650 to $700 range - but that might be the "new" cheap after 6 years of inflation.

Actually we can no longer buy on line which is part of the NYS safe act, and they were supposed to have this database and or registry created for all purchases of ammunition, to date I do not believe is in use, so at this time its literally a farce. I most certainly hope that it reflects at the upcoming election, in spite of the elected official that pushed this agenda on us. All I had to tell the young lady at the register was my birth date, no ID etc. Governor wants a record of all ammunition transactions, besides the other changes, and we don't hear much about it, it's a complicated mess for some other discussion LOL !

I had found some of those .308's at Palmetto state armory, (website) and ordered several boxes before the deadline on ordering from the web, and it was needed, now I just try add to it, a little at a time, and thankfully I have what I need and then some, no different than before, I mean I could go a few years, get 2 boxes of those, repeat, don't really shoot all that much and have relied on that one rifle being on, to conserve, now I can practice a little this year !

I guess the .22 is short everywhere, cripes in '97 and later, there was always a display of Federal, 500 round boxes, was $9.86 per the tag on the box, and you could walk out with arms full of it. These were the loose filled boxes, no boxes of 50 inside.

The young man at the counter said he noticed some state troopers congregating prior to coming into the store, with the intent on buying all the .22 that does come in weekly, meaning they show up every week to do the same. I am not sure of the validity of that statement, but he works that counter, its probably the strangest thing I've heard about this situation yet, I will have to listen up and see if anything else comes to light about that. Now there are local ads, $75 for 500, I won't pay that extortion, yet anyway LOL ! I did stock up enough on those. At least I have enough to deal with varmints and pests when needed which does have a little priority like this year with so many woodchucks trying to make dens near the house.

LOL ! I have though of the end result of hoarding, in this state, they must realize by now, there are some huge stashes out there, and well before too, I recall many people grabbing cases of ammunition over the years from a local who was a gun dealer, that had warehouses of it, he sold globally, its out there, you just have to find it. He's still in business, I recall in '07 of him running out of ammunition lots he's had tens of thousands of rounds of, we bought it for years, the same stuff, couple hundred at a time at most.

I know societies have broken down in past history, but if for some far fetched reason you had to "bug out" you really can't carry that much ammunition, maybe there's a lot of bunkers out there that they will run too LOL ! Its fine to plan ahead, and be prepared, but I know of many that when asked about this scenario, they all say, jokingly, "we'll just go to so and so's house" to get his guns and ammo, meaning that person has quite a bit. I just shake my head, (hope like heck the reality of doomsday is just not possible), as I type this from my concrete bunker LOL !

I've been out of .22LR for a long time. In fact, I have a new Browning 1911-style .22 I bought nearly two years ago that I've never fired. I don't run store-to-store looking for ammo, as I rarely shoot, but when I'm in a store I check. Clerk at my Walmart told me last weekend that they would have a shipment of ammo, including .22LR, on Saturday morning, limit 3 boxes per person. I'll miss it because the DirecTV guy expects me to be at home that day.

Billy you can't order ammo as a private individual but can you get it if you run it through a gun shop?

Yes, I am pretty sure of that... The Cabelas 2 hours away said that they could order what ever we wanted, but there was no for-sure that it would ever get here!

I'm just about at the point that I am going to have to pay whatever it takes on 22LR. Bought a nice little Browning 22SA in the Spring and I have yet to fire it. The few rounds I have are reserved for chance encounters with wildlife of the damaging sort...coons, coyotes, etc. Last two possums I pulled out of buildings I beat to death with a pipe. I don't understand the situation with 22LR. Generally when there is a hole in the market, people rush to fill it. Heaven knows if I could manufacture them I would be in full production right now and raking it in.

I'll have you know I subscribe to that philosophy, utilizing such things for the same purpose LOL ! (SAFELY) of course, I have placed boots on the hot water manifold in the boiler room, toasty warm there all the time, kind of awkward where it is but it does work. The other location is a loop of fine tube radiator, that literally passes over my smoke pipe from the wood stove, shoes are warm/dry, but its not cool enough yet to fire it up. That location works, but you have to place them so that if one was to fall it won't land on the stove. The old cast iron radiators were the best for drying shoes LOL !

What I hate about the cold is the condensation or sweat that occurs in my shoes, so I bumped up a size, and make sure to get the wide width, its the toes that need room to open up a little, this seems to be the cause, the other thing was the residual moisture, just spent hundreds on foot wear, and realized they just don't dry on their own, with the insert taken out when they are off, so the problem perpetuates, compounds daily, then of course they will not have a pleasant odor, it ruins the shoe prematurely.

I don't know where you live but if you learn where the places are in your area that have ammo and every time you are going past one stop in.I live in the northern part of the state and my daughter lives in central part of state and there are about 10 places I know of that sell ammo and every time I go visit her I stop at 2 or 3 of them and I don't go out of my way to do it. You will stumble on some ammo by doing this.

Yes, exactly.... you have to have the shop, store or qualified dealer/seller order it for you. I've not attempted it yet.

I remember a lot of these places that you could order from while at your desk, using your PC, laptop, like anything else, started cutting us off before the deadline, they did not want the hassle, don't want trouble with the law etc. I don't know if that has continued, and affects who the qualified dealers sources currently, but do know if I drive over the state line, I cannot buy any at Cabelas in CT. being an out of state resident of NY. We used to make an annual trip there, you could always buy it in the past.

I don't have a smart phone, but there is an app that will show you when .22 LR is on the truck at your store.

At my local Wallyworld they put out the new stuff at 7AM, I think.

I was talking to two guys working the gun department a week ago and they said that any time there is some coming in there will be a line of dudes ready to buy it all up right away.

Those are the dudes reselling it and making money at it. Legal or not, that is what is going on.
How to find ammo:

I always see 17 ammo for sale on the shelves. I wonder if this is how they plan to sell the 17 guns ? If no 22 ammo you will have to buy a 17 gun and ammo . Just saying.

I bought a 325 rd box at Scheels All Sports in Sioux City Ia Tuesday for $19.99.
Oh yeah, they are Federals.

According to the manufacturers they are at full production. Been shippimg everything they can make. Donno how long before the hoarders get bored snd supplies open up. Manufacturers do however have a problem, they're doing longer production runs between changeovers, so your favorite caliber may be out longer.

A non chain sporting goods store near me has kept plenty of 22 LR imported from brazil for about a year now. It was $60.00 for a brick of ten 50 round boxes when I bought some several months ago. I saw some 22 LR and 22 WMR at a gun show recently and to me it was priced way to high for the current market.

I stopped in the local Dick's a couple of weeks ago around 3 PM on a weekday, saw no .22LR on the shelves, asked the clerk and he said they had plenty, sitting on the counter, 40 round boxes of American Eagle for $2.49 (6.25 cents/round), limit 3 boxes. Maybe that says the local hoarders have enough inventory.
They had plenty of pistol ammo, buy four boxes, get one free. Rifle ammo was discounted 20% I believe. I guess the pipelines are getting full once again.

I can get 22lr ammo around here its just what do you wanna spend, price nearly doubled and for awhile basically tripled, spent 75.00 about a year ago for a 500 brick which it was my favorite ammo, the Remington thunder bolt, which is 0.15 a round, can remember when I bout it for 4-6 cents around not long ago, shot gun shells are everywhere but some rifle ammo is still scarce from what it was, I can get it just cots a bit more, and there still isn't as much on shelves.

Don't wanna argue with you but last week I just ordered 22lr shells from online shipped to my door. And it was from a ammo store but it shipped right to my door, shipping was expensive but I ordered enough ammo it made it cheaper than stores around me so it worked out good.

Do you live in the state of New York? If you do you violated New York Safe Act that was enacted in Jan.14,2014 that states no private on line sales only face to face dealer sales. If I lived in New York state and did this I wouldn't be saying any thing you don't want the feds down on you.

(quoted from post at 19:12:33 10/02/14) If I lived in New York state and did this I wouldn't be saying any thing you don't want the feds down on you.

The Feds don't enforce NY law. The NY Gestapo does.

Aguila is better quality than most of the US made stuff.

I had a couple of boxes of Aguila in .45 AUTO. Pretty good stuff, honestly.

I've shot some of the "Aguila Ammo" and it's actually some pretty good stuff, regardless of where it comes from. Heck I've shot American stuff, Russian stuff, German stuff, Chinese stuff, and who knows what else and as long as it goes bang, and I can afford it, I don't care where it comes from....cause the gun ain't no good all by itself.

Billy another NY'er here and avid shooter. Making a trip over to PA should get you all the ammo you want. PA doesn't check for PA residency so they wont check you either.

I have bought all calibers both handgun and long gun when I drive over for business.
