Does anyone out there have any ideas about my problem with my 4020, it will start right up and run for about half a minute and stop, and you can start it again and it will run again and do the same thing , I changed the lift pump and the filters, it seems like it gets air some where, there is lots of fuel at the lift pump and no leaks behind it, I don,t think it is the injection pump, because it starts right away, any ideas, it is a diesel

Might be bits of a failing governor ring in the pump, plugging the return to the tank.

Remove the little timing window on the side of the pump and see if you have what appears to be white or brown grains of sand in that opening.
If so, the plastic governor ring is failing and needs to be replaced ASAP. Total failure can result in engine runaway and all the bad that goes with that.

Ditto what Jon Hagen stated. see if engine will run longer with timing cover on inj pump loose if so check return line check valve(parts key 24) that screws into inj for plugging.

Take the return line loose at the pump turn it away from tractor and see if it runs mine did the same thing and had to have the pump rebuilt. And there is a correct way to take pump out and put back in dont forget this.

check no 24 part and see if theirs tiny chunks in side it.I think their could be s small glass ball in their that plugs the return. That can cause what yours is doing.

Funny thing just yesterday we figured out the problem with the
forklift. Has a John Deere engine and exact symptoms you
describe and found problem same as ejr-Ia suggested.

I took a look at it this afternoon, it started just like always but it has a lot of diesel fuel in the oil,the tractor sat for about three months, could that still be from the return line being plugged? or some other reason, is there a parts break down of the injection pump somewhere?that any one knows about

The lift pump is brand new, so I think it is time to
bring the injection pump to town,I checked the
return line today, did not find the little glass
ball, and all seemed to be open
