Not sure if this is what you're talking about, but since you brought up the subject. Our black walnut trees don't have any nuts on them this year. Are we the only ones?

I'm in northwest In. and our three trees have a bumper crop.
Last year We had people stopping and asking to pick them up, this year nobody so far.
I guess the squirrels are gonna eat good all winter.

My e-mail is open and I will be happy to check for you. Don't get your hopes up though. Not sure if you been following along but the weather has been a bit off this year. As a result I spend very little time on the fields. I have not been out there in two weeks and it was wet, cold and lots of bugs. I did find one tree with some nuts down low so I picked one but had a devil of a time shelling it. The husks were tough and I am not sure it was full ripe. Don't know for sure how to tell. There were not many nuts on that tree and like as not the squirrels have taken them. I have to go out either Friday or Sunday and check on things so I will know then. Drop me a note and I will let you know.

As for those walnut trees, got better than a hunnert of them on the place and some large. I have trees that are bare of leaves and nuts, some that have no leaves and lots of nuts and some just starting to change color. Beautiful trees for the few months they are with us. Leaves open in June and fall in late August some years.

Hey, you have the same Walnut family I do! Last to leaf out and first to drop. We have a huge Walnut tree about ten feet from the front door and get to hear, all night, the walnuts hitting the roof. Used to crack them after drying--figured we (she) was earning about 50¢ an hour. Good wages back in 1910; not so much now (dang unions LOL)

Let me know how things look after this weekend. If your shag barks don't have enough nuts to bother with, Steve A W sounds like he has a surplus. Then I'll contact him and see if he wants to send some nuts out to Idaho.

I used to worry about getting hit in the head but turns out the squirrels are more than up to the job of keeping them picked. Most nuts are carried off before they are ready to fall.

My experience has been that Walnut trees have a 'bumper' crop every other year, not so many every other year ?
