It was only a matter of time. CDC has confirmed the first case of Ebola in the US.

A man who just returned from Africa is in maximum isolation at a Dallas hospital.

Agree w/Wile E, anyone coming back from that area should go immediately to isolation BEFORE boarding a plane for the US.

I have a better idea. Anyone going over their should stay over their, unless their sent by our military.

How would you like to have shared a plane ride with him? Think of how many contacts that person has made flying though international airports and smaller hops across the US back to Texas.

Sounds like the beginning of every good "Outbreak" movie ever made.

Agree, that it was only a matter of time.

Also do NOT understand why they do not keep people contained in the area where the illness originated - in an attempt to keep it from going global. Sheeesh.

Add this to the equation...

Most of the people in the outbreak area are nnalert. They're on their way to Mecca for their annual pilgrimage. Imagine the travel modes used there, the over crowded trains, shared rooms, massive crowds, little or no sanitation or medical care...

Another reason why I don't want to fly anymore.

In the mid 70's I was on a plane almost every day of the week for work. Waiting to depart San Diego one day, I watched a fly come into the cabin. He flew around in the cabin all the way to New York, then flew out as soon as the door was opened. Made me think how quickly disease can be spread around the world.

Our southern border is porous like a sieve. I believe this flu epidemic that hit Kansas City a month ago was probably brought in by those refugees from South America that we just let waltz in.

We are the stupidist people to let other flaunt our laws. We need to kick out some politicians big time and take our country back.

I dont want to be working on my antique tractor and have to worry about this crap.

Notice how I made it tractor related???

We quarantine animals to protect other animals. Does that mean dogs have more influence on Washington than we do?

Seems like the higher up folks have been wanting this to happen for a while. Hope they are satisfied. Bet there will not be anyone coming here to help. We try to solve the worlds problems and can't take care of our problems.

The Dr from Liberia with Ebola was treated at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, which is 1/2 mile from my house! Kind of a weird feeling knowing such a disease is that close to me personally! I am glad we have the facilities to treat something like this though!

From what I understand a victim isn't contagious until he/she starts showing symptoms like sneezing or fever. Then it is spread by contact with body fluids. My vote is for at least a two week quarantine before entering the plane or train, bus, motorcycle, ox cart, whatever, that leaves the country's borders from those areas afflicted.

In this age of Political correctness, we cannot "Profile" a person (it may hurt their self-esteem).

As most say.."There IS NO cure for STUPID"...

The severity and length of this outbreak is probably due to international meddling. These epidemics in Africa usually burn out on their own, after killing several thousand head the resistance in a given area rises with few, if any, long term ramifications. We will be lucky if several hundred other cases haven't walked across our borders these last several months.

I agree. That would be the sensible thing to do.....maybe that is why it isn't done because it is sensible lol. Years ago from what I have heard with something such as polio, people were scared and didn't know how things like that were spread. Now we even know about how things are spread and yet some don't seem to care and seem like oh well...

You complain about how the country/government is reactionary. Take a look in the mirror.

How many times have you known something should be replaced on a piece of farm equipment as a matter of routine maintenance, yet you don't because you don't have time, don't have money, need to get the job done, figure it'll hold out a little while longer, etc.???

Instead, you put it off. Then it breaks. When you need it most.

So what if we secured our border? You'd be crying about how much taxpayer money was being "wasted" doing it!

"Why are we wasting all this money on border security? Ain't no illegals coming across!"

Actually I look at the baby boomers. The most self centered generation the world has ever seen. I see nothing short of revolution to reverse the mess they've made of the nation.

That's what they say - but in truth they don't know. Even Chris "Shiver up my leg" Matthews was all over the administration for them down playing the chances of Ebola entering the US. Now its come in on an international flight where thousands were exposed.

The CDC says every person exposed should be quarantined for 21 days - heard anything about thousands of people being quarantined in the US yet? Plan on the next 50 Ebola patients being announced in the next 10 days and several hundred in the following weeks.

Procedures for exposure on an airplane:

Not even attempted at this time.

I must apologize. It was not my intent to start a hoorah. Since the case is in Dallas and might not be reported nationwide, I was passing along some info I thought was important

I picked it up on the Google news site. We are just going to have to live with these problems. The guy came over from W. Africa, Liberia to be exact to visit relatives.
Liberia is in the area of the highest outbreak.
There are some 5000 persons living in NE Dallas from that area. One being interviewed has been here for 30 years.
It is spread only after the symptoms become apparent and incubation period is 21 days max. So suspected contacts have a 21 day isolation they have to endure before they know whether or not they got it.
The person bringing it over did not have the symptoms until 4 days after the flight so the passengers on the flight are expected to be immune.
It is transmitted via body fluids when the symptoms are present so it's not airborne and if you stay away from the fluids you are ok.
A second person has contacted it. My guess is someone in contact with him when he was coming down with the symptoms. Some get over it some don't; 50-50.
No current cure.

It's been around for over 20 years but this is the largest outbreak. Maybe because people are more mobile now. I think the article mentioned that there is at least one non stop from over there to DFW airport either daily or weekly.

That's what I learned about it this AM.

When this blows over it will be something else.
A never ending cycle of panicing the public. Keeping them distracted, off balance, stressed out.

My comment was deleted. So I will rephrase it for everybody.

--Keep all the invested Ebola victims in Africa.
If you are dumb enough to go over there and get the disease then tough crap, stay there.
