OT- GM ignition recall

Went to the GM dealer today to get my 2006 impala ignition switch recall fixed. I ask the service manager when I should pick the car up...he said it only takes 10 min to fix...I said ok..they took my 2 keys and added a plastic insert to the key ring slot...so the hole is in the center of each key..instead of oblong. That's the fix.

I've seen pictures of the recall fix. It really is a pathetic fix.
Not to take the side of GM here, but there really would be no way to you instantly have several million ignition switches made up and have them all installed by the Mr. Goodwrenches without going broke.

But they knew they were defective for over 5 years...even as they installed them in new vehicles. They had plenty of time.

Got a 2004 monte carlo-earnhardt edition, got the notice and calling dealership tommorrow and if thats the repair, i will decline.

I have a 2006 Impala also, got a notice from GM that I shouldn't put other keys on ring but said they were gonna fix it but didn't have parts yet. Maybe soon I will get that "super fix" also

I'm a bit surprised at this because when I took my Chev Cobalt in for the recall job, they claimed to change the ignition switch, but at the very least, they cut me a couple of new keys which had only a round hole for the key ring. They kept my old key with the slotted ring hole, and gave me back my old key with round hole. I live in south central Canada.

It seems to me the most cost-effective way to fix it, would have been to turn the switch in such a way that the key was vertical when in "run", when it was put in the car.

But what do I know, I'm not a Gub'mint Motors engineer.

It seems like ya'll are talking about different recalls here. Yes there are different recalls and different repairs but they both pertain to the keys and/or ignition switch. So they are similar in problems but different recalls. Basically most of the bigger GM cars get the band-aid type key inserts or new keys if the two different design inserts wont fit. The smaller GM cars/suv's are more of a problem with the ignition switch but they get new keys with the small hole centered in end of the key.

The idea of the key hole redesign is with the elongated key hole that weight from the bulk of keys or whatever is hanging on the key ring can tug on the side key and cause the key to rotate back to the "off" position, this can become a bigger problem when hitting bumps etc. The new design key with the centered key hole will reduce the chance of the key turning back due to weight from the key ring. GM also recommends only putting 1-2 additional "essential" keys plus a key fob on the key ring.

1. It's not just a GM "problem". My wife has a FIAT Grand Cherokee and got a similar recall notice.

2. At what point did the ignition key/key ring become the attaching point for a pound-and-a-half of GARBAGE? Although I suppose you could say they should have seen it coming, but can you imagine being a nerdy engineer and having the task dropped on you of designing an ignition switch with all the required functions and not getting the memo that every woman in America is gonna hang a pound or two of CRAP on your designed product???

3. At what point did drivers lose all ability to recover from a disaster/potential problem and have the capability to steer or brake a car if the power function(s) are lost?

Not only don't they know how to react, but they drive too fast and too close, leaving themselves ZERO time to react if something unexpected happens.

But you can't blame the victim, even if they really carry some of the blame. Even "righties" don't dare blame the victim.

Well it makes sense. The ignition key is a smart key now and either includes your door lock remote switch (RAM) or is a little plastic container on a very small key chain with the key. No weight to either to speak of.
I have seen some of those key chains others herein describe that women (no offense intended, just fact) store in their purses. Surprised a kitchen sink isn't attached.

On a similar note people who hang a bunch of stuff on the rear view mirror increase the chance of them coming off too. A little weight on a key chain may not seem like a big deal but after they swing back and forth and bounce around on every little bump for "x" amount of miles, it is more than likely to cause a problem at some point.

y wife told me she had a knock in her 01 Malibu. Not bad and only when turning. I drove it several times and heard nothing. One day I took it for another drive again nothing so she grabs her purse and out the door upset that it never happened when I was in the car. As she backed away from the house turning around quickly came back and said get in quick its doing it. Well it wasn't, but she was determined to show me anyway. Didn.t take 20 ft. Backing out and turning when she put in drive all the trinkets and assorted junk started knocking on the dash. When I reached over and grabbed them and said there I fixed it. It got very quiet in the car, very short quiet trip back to the house.
