Plow Day in Ireland

These people really take their ploughing ( this is the way they spell it ) seriously. Known as the National Ploughing Match in County Laois Ireland. The largest farm show that I have ever been to. Three hundred contestants plowing, over 1400 venders and near three hundred thousand people attending the three day event. Just returned last night and have other pictures of the Irish Countryside if anyone is interested. Tom

Wonder if anyone has tried no-till over there ?
Likely they would stone you to death if you tried as serious as they take ploughing.

That is always great to see, the "plough" match's. The Irish countryside would be most welcome in my opinion, have an ancestral connection to Galway.

The moldboards are longer, narrower and even then there's that one with the extensions, always wondered what the different styles are for or if they are a progression from earlier era's of agriculture and or soil types etc.

I have never seen such a straight dead furrow. Most of the time with the way the soil is here it ends up looking like a noodle lol.

I was just near there for a Penn State game in early September. What a beautiful country. I will be going back with the wife this time.

Here are a few more from Ireland.
The second picture is of a loom in the Avaco Woolen Mills, next is a farm home along the Irish Sea and the next one is a typical small town with Mom and Pop stores. There are many miles of stone fences and narrow winding roads. At least a million Holstien Cows and for every cow there must have been at least fifteen sheep. Every herd of cows seemed to have there own pasture.
The next picture is of the Powers Court Hotel and one of the most beautiful places one could imagine. It is in the Wicklow Mountians area about ten miles south of Dublin and has one of the finest botanical gardens in all of Europe along with a equally fine golf course. The others are of Dublin Streets and I thought the fellow that sculptured the dog and sow was quite clever.

Mike,
Some were but also other makes were used. I have never seen plows with so many adjustments available. I am quite sure that they are only used for competition plowing and made especially for that purpose.

You see quite a lot of the long moldboard Kvernlands up here in clay country. Very popular in a sod plow. Of course you also have the guys that just use more HP and the field looks like a bomb range after they get done.

We have a British national that farms a couple miles from me. She says in the UK farming is still an honorable and esteemed occupation whereas here you're one step above a piano player in a brothel if you farm. I think she has a point.
