last of corn chopping pics

Got the silo full finally on Sunday. Only a couple small breakdowns. The sickle drive on my chopper broke, you can see it had a very poor "farmer" weld on it. The guy obviously believed that quantity made up for quality. Lol. I didn't bother to grind all his crap off since it wasn't going to do much anyway, and I was in a hurry, so I just cleaned off where I needed to work and rewelded it. I also needed to keep part of the old on so I got the arm timed right. The frame on the Badger box also broke where they commonly do. So I repaired that as well. I forgot to get pics of the strap I added to the bottom of the top flange to strengthen that, but it's there. My favorite oldest son Eric came up to help out too, that alone made for a great day. As you can see the earlier planted corn is drier and much taller than what we planted on the fourth.

I wish I could share in the joy. The corn is so heavy I don't know what I'm going to do with it. I hate to pick a silage variety, the ears are kind of small. I'm still on the first 17 acres without much hope of finishing it today, and another 23 acres I haven't touched yet. The bunker is more than half full. I'll be darned lucky if I'm done in a week.

Nice pictures. I enjoy seeing the old equipment still at work. We have the IH "parent" to the Case chopper you have. It's been quite a while since it has been used so I wish I could have been there to hear your machine run. This may seem ridiculous but if I came into a multi-million dollar fortune I would put up 5 acres or so just for the fun of it. I could always donate that silage to somebody who lost their silage in a flood or something. It's nice to dream.

Some excellent welding there. It is nice to see a clean weld when you get done. Very good work.

Those repairs look good.

First thing I thought when I looked at the picture, that arm was welded once before, kinda welded :)

As others have said, having a good welder if worth its weight in gold when you need it.

I was in the welding business doing this type work for 20 years before I became a trucker. Think about going back all the time, just don't like the thought of getting started again. I do have all the equipment I would need, just need a place and inventory. And yes, good equipment can make an average welder look good.😉

Excellent repair work. You can tell you take pride in your welding/fab work.

The contrast in the videos is neat. You can hear the knives on the chopper singing a lot louder on the corn.

Sitting in the tractor you don't notice it as much as if you are out in the yard and someone in the neighborhood is chopping corn.

This reminds me, I actually remembered to take some pics last week when I was helping the FIL fill his silage bag. BW
