Tractor/Equipment Terminology and Craigslist.

Have been keeping a mental record of some of my favourite descriptions in craigslist ads. . . not sure if folks do not know how to spell or if they really think this is what their items are called:

1. Backhole (vs. backhoe) -- one of the best in my opinion
2. Frail Mower (vs. flail mower)
3. Tractor with wench (Im guessing vs. winch)
4. Bottom Plow (without a number to designate how many bottoms. . . )
5. Cycle Mower (vs. Sickle Mower)

. . . I know there have been many others, but need to start writing them down. Any one else have any good ones?

Probably posting with a "smart phone" that puts what it thinks is the correct word in, after you type only a few letters...

That coupled with the sheer laziness to proof read, gets you such adds! : Bryce

I see these also in want ads. Some are really funny. Usually honest mistakes or misspelled words or person working at the paper misunderstands.

Your example #3 reminds me of old joke : Elderly single farmer places ad looking for lady with tractor, send picture of tractor.

In your example , lonely farmer sees your ad and responds by asking for picture of wench !

Or how about:

"Runs out good".

O.K., What runs out of it? Oil, gas?

Or "running when parked".

Scrap blade for sale--from the price they were asking I can't imagine them calling it scrap. :)

My favorite has always been Farm All tractor.

Disc Hare is another good one--I'm thinking a circular bunny?

Yep few have a clue as to what they have but want big bucks for things that they have no clue of what it is

My favorite is an ad selling an "Alice" Chalmers with a pic of the tractor clearly showing the correct spelling of Allis Chalmers.

I saw an Alice Chamblers Fork Lift for sale the other day lol.

My two favorites are still the JD "syngro" transmission, and the side "council" or "counsel".

I wasn't necessarily pointing out someones errors, or commenting about them, I was just presenting a theory as to what I thought may be happening! As you can see I make errors myself...

Not sure what you meant by that? But, whatever... Bryce

Spell check has made a lot of us lazy. Spelling is a matter of education, not intelligence.

In the late 70's early 80's the US military took a hard look at rewriting all of the manuals. From an 8th grade level to 6th.

While I was an instructor training junior officers we were required to do a lot of writing on student evaluations. We had to get rid of mid grade NCO's because of their writing skills. We had so who would write "he done good" or "he done real good". These guys were all good leaders and at worst competent tank commanders yet their educational background was lacking. The Army was working on that with on duty classes to teach reading, writing, English and math. A lot of these guys fought attending those classes because they were embarrassed.

My apologies. . . a leftover habit from time spent in Australia. . . colour, favourite, etc. They do some spelling a bit different over there -- my "favourite" word was aluminum; it sounded like "al-u-minium."

They tried fixing that type of stuff on my old job. Went to something like a 4 year college degree, might be 2 years, I forget. Anyway, all it did is get us people who could use a computer to spell. Problem was they still couldn't string a group of words together into a coherent sentence.

The strangest one that I see on CL is the variations on "wheelbarrow."
"wheel barrel"
"wheel bearrow"
"wheelbarra"
Saw a few others that I can't remember right now.

Some that I see frequently otherwise:
confusion between "to, too, and two"
"were" in place of "where"
And some put an apostrophe in front of EVERY S!!
