Need Info On JD B Engine

Hey guys, need a little info on a JD B Engine. We completely rebuilt the head, but now we need to know how to put it back together!!

It is a 1935 John Deere B, Serial "8155".

How much Torque should we set the wrench to when bolting the head on?

Also, what should we set the valve clearance to, and what should the torque value be when we are bolting the valves on to the head?

I know when I put my '50 B together the torque values had been updated and increased. Check with a knowledgeable John Deere dealer.

96 lb ft. For head nuts. .020 for valves hot. Most folks Myself included set them a loose .020 cold initially, then recheck hot when re-torque the head after a couple of good heat cycles. The later B's have a different and higher torque spec.

Bryce, some may say you don't need them, but I would bet most will tell you that you do need them. Not a JD expert by any means, but I always use them. Manual says to use them, they go under the head nuts under the valve cover. I believe you can still get them through JD, for sure from aftermarket suppliers.

I see now some head sets have the option for copper washers instead of the lead, for more money.

After you told me that I might look into running them, dad told me that the complete engine gasket set that I bought had a pack of the little lead washers in it for the head stud nuts, so as of right now, I have the lead ones!

As far as I am concerned, for as little as I am going to use the tractor, I think that they will probably be fine! Thanks for the information! I really appreciate it! Bryce
