1086 transmission cover

My 1086 lost all forward gears the other day, still have reverse and park. Removed seat and transmission cover. Snap ring of forward-reverse shifting rail gone and rail had moved. Trying to reinstall, but not sure how to keep pressure on spring loaded rollers. No longer a dealer in our area, but have talked to 2 shop managers and they say have to remove fuel tank. Neighbor thinks he can reinstall the cover, but can't figure out how to keep tension on the spring and rollers. Have heard of some kind of a tool that helps in this process.
Any thought and ideas appreciated.

there a special tool that you need to remove the top cover so you dont loses reverse when and if you removed top cover if the reverse shifter shaft came out with top cover you well need to remove fuel tank to get it right as there is a key in shaft. now to hold the tension on spring detent rollers there also a special tool which i prompley trowed in the trash, what i did and still do is look at the under side of cover you well see a knot protrusion that about a inch long i drill a small hole in it big enough to hold a16penny nail pull the shift mechanizes tight slip the nail in install top cover then pull the nail out fill hole with silicone

These pictures are of copies of the tools that I made to do the job.

RiI drill a small hole in top cover in same
location Ben says, but I drill it and tap it for an
1/8 pipe plug and use a bolt to hold lever back,
cant remember if is was 5/16 or 3/8 bolt,
whichever fits tightest in the hole. It is possible
to get the shaft back into the fork if it slips out
but takes alot of patience, light, mirrors and a
couple strong magnets. I replaced the shaft on
mine and didnt feel like pulling the dual on mine
to remove the tank. I nicked the edge of the key
way in the shaft with a punch to hold the key
tight while working in back into the fork.

you can get the tool you need from ag parts but if you already have the top off and dont plan on doing a lot of them you dont need it i done probably 75 to 100 of thoes over the years so tool was need and hope i never use it again but i bet i well lol,,
