flembo,

I just got back to your previous post about your Ford 501 Sickle Bar Mower. Concerning the ledger plates: the original rock guards that were on that mower had replaceable ledger plates in the rock guard.

Ford used a funky little pin to hold the ledger plate into the rock guard. The pins were not rivets, they were not bolts. They were just short pins with little post-like things sticking out of the side of the pins. The pins were easily removable with a drift punch from the bottom end of the rock guard. Then, the new ledger plate was set into place on the rock guard and a new pin was inserted through the ledger plate from the top of the rock guard.

The pin would tap into the rock guard with very little effort. Again using a drift punch to set the pin. The ledger plate has a "counter-sink" style hole on the top of the ledger plate, so the head of the pin goes down into the ledger plate without sticking up too high.

The ledger plates and the pins are pretty expensive. I recently replaced mine and I think that I paid something over $100.00 for a set of plates and pins.

There are lots of after market rock guards that don't have replaceable ledger plates, so if that's what you have, the only way to replace the ledger plate is to replace the whole rock guard.

Ain't this fun?
