BIG RUH

Storm came through last weekend and one field of corn had at least 50% laying down. They say it had worms and the stalks were brittle. When the storm can through, the stalks just snapped. Any ideas to which worm was in the field? Field is in Illinois, St. Louis area.

Dissect several stalks with a sharp knife, when you find the worm(s) you should be able to identify it on the internet. My guess would be corn bore, but assuming things can get one into trouble.

I believe Sweetfeet is correct. The damage caused by corn rootworm will make the stalk weak and subject to lodging.

If you can harvest the corn from the direction of the lean.

Slice some of the stalks. If there is a hole going up through it, your problem is likely corn borer.

Root worms cause weak roots and the corn will lean over at the roots not break the stalk.

Corn borer is most likely the pest here.
