After reading replies to my post concerning the 7400 I didn't get it, instead I bought a Remington 742. According to the serial #'s it was built between 1978 & 1981. The looks of the lands and grooves nice and shiny no blemishes on the stock, or missing bluing anywhere on the rifle. Came with a Charles Daly 2-7 scope with see thru mounts, iron backup sites. We took 3 pictures to get the whole gun for viewing.Only thing we have to buy is a sling, and a set of 30-06 small base dies for reloading. Stopped by Farm and Fleet on the way home and bought a box of ammo to try it out and see if the scope is accurate with Winchester ammo 180 grain.
Price for the gun was under $200.00 with scope,so I don't think it's too bad. Now the gun case we found in the ditch will fit it for carrying around in the truck or TRACTOR.

I dont know a lot about guns, but that sounds like a very good price to me. I am thinking of getting a pa license this year, lots of deer around the place this year. Being I Dont live there I Would have to get an out of state license

Larry,
Nowadays in some states it's cheaper to buy the legal deer from the DNR if possible,I never bought one, and come thru the whole season empty handed, especially when it stayed below zero. If licenses are too much for out of state, have a neighbor buy a extra license and you pay for it, and have him get you a deer. You do the pulling of the deer and offer him a 12 pack for his generosity.Last time we checked Wisconsin Out of State licenses they were over $200.00,but we seem to get a lot of hunters with out of state plates every year.If you do hunt stay safe and have a good venison lunch, nothing tastes better on a cold day than fresh deer.Plus you are recouping some of your loss from this years garden. As I typed this there was a small doe at the bottom of our driveway walk by. She's safe from us as we wont shoot her or any other deer on our property. Thanks for the reply.

Not to be the bearer of bad news, but the 742s had issues. The bolts chew up the receiver which keeps them from cycling. It may be Ok if it was owned by someone who only fired a half a box a year and kept it lubed.

The 740 and 7400s have changed to try to fix the problem.

You might want to check about a Land Owners Tag.Even though you live out of state, you stil own land in PA.

Never heard of problems with the model 742 hanging up. Dad used a 06 for 50 plus yrs. and never a problem. I have had a 308 that's over 50 yrs. old and never a problem. The Browning auto is a different story. Just my experiences....

^^^This^^^. And if the chamber is not kept clean and free of rust it will not cycle.
