Orchards Frost

Does anyone still use "Smudge Pots" and those large slow spinning air circulating fans to keep the frost off their orchards. I saw those things being used in the Orange groves in Southern California as a youngster and was wondering if anyone still uses them.

I was up in the Orchard country around Hood River Oregon, a few weeks ago. I saw both smudge pots and fans scattered around the orchards.
I think they've pretty well banned smudge pots in the pear orchards in Southern Oregon. That place does get socked in bad with smoke/smog.

They use the fans here. Havent seen a smodge pot in years. Now-a-days they have porpane 'heaters' at regular intervals

I think it was two years ago I had a client in here and it somehow came out that we own these fields and around the corner from some of them is this little cider mill. Somehow it led from there to the fact that my wife has some past knowledge of orchards up in the north of Michigan and the use of smudge pots. Well come that Spring we were having some really bad weather and a late freeze threatening all the fruit here. LSS, client called our office with a request from the cider mill fella for more info on smudge pots. So SWMBO told him all she knew and I guess they tried 2-3 nights keeping the fires going to keep the freeze from killing the blossom buds. Unfortunately the weather that year was a different sort of horrific and most all buds were killed off. He and most other mills had to bring apples in from out of state. Cider was awful that year. I am a little fuzzy on the details, but when you get wind of the fact that the woman you married may have spent some cold nights out in the cherry orchards with God knows who it may be best not to ask too many questions. :)
