99 Chevie 1500 Parking brakes

Have not looked yet and have not done this in years but while we were on vacation the one boy put new rear brakes on my pickup. Now they drag, drive it 15 miles and they are rather warm. Is there an adjustment on the parking brakes or where should I look? Thanks for any and all help. J.

if its rear disc, there is a star wheel type adjuster, usually you can acess it thru the dust shield. if they are drum, just back off the regular shoe adjuster.

Another thing to check is the parking brake cables are letting go after you release the pedal. Reach under each side with the brake released and pull on the cable, it should extend by pulling and return as you release, if you don't use the parking brake all the time the cables rust up..

The rear calipers are hanging up. Happens all the time on those when you push them in. I have gotten to the point I quote calipers on rear brake jobs on those trucks. I have been burned tons of times on comebacks.

Are the parking brakes inside the rear of the disc rotor on a 99? My 2000 is that way, I removed them when installing new rotors. Never used the parking brake anyway.

The problem with rear brakes on pickups is they never get used. If you usually run empty, you need to make an occasional hard stop to activate them. Otherwise they rust up; the proportioning valve won't send any pressure to the rear brakes on a normal stop. My wife drove a 2002 Silverado for a couple of years, and I think I ended up doing the rear brakes a couple of times for this reason.
