Installing Wheel Seals

I always tapped on the seal to get it flush with the hub. Now I am having second thoughts and am considering driving then as deep as they will go and press a bit more to see if they will expand. I want to hear from what the seal manufacturers and experts say.

I always install to a depth that I know will place the seal lip on a clean portion of the shaft.

I will, from time to time, put a thin film of RTV on the outside of the seal too, if the bore is pitted

Check closely before you put that seal in; the axle may still have a slight taper in the area where the seal is flush. To get a good seal, the seal needs to be on the flat of the stub axle, which may require being driven further inside the hub.
