Using Google to get the facts

I am surprised that many people on this site do not use google to get the facts about the subject under discussion. It is a great tool and very helpful to understand the facts about a situation.

If you have never tried it, here are some simple items to help you get started. Put them in to google and see what answers you get.

What is the population of Mercer co. Kentucky?

Is the population of Buffalo NY growing?

What is the crime rate in Ferguson MO?

What is the average cost of a funeral?

Where does Kentucky rank in beef cattle production?

See how easy it is to get facts, rather than hearsay?

Yes, Google is a good source of information, probably about 90% of it is good. But you do have to use some discretion.

There is no filter for "bad" information. It picks up on key words, and if someone posted something totally in error, or an opinion (just like I'm doing now! LOL) it doesn't know the difference!

One of my pet peeves is the "How to..." articles. Not sure where those come from, and about 90% are correct, but some are just plain wrong! Or they are so vague they leave you with "Huhhh?" Like "How to remove a tractor engine?" Answer "Remove bolts, remove engine." LOL

That certainly seems like a good way to stop or slow down those pesky interactions and conversations among friendly and gregarious people. TDF

Edd, you are no fun! some of the best entertainment on here is looking up on Google where someone answers a question with a pretty off base answer. Every now and then I will google a subject when I am suspicious of an answer, and then sometimes watch the fun discussion develop. :D

I admit I use Google just because I'm comfortable with it. But as far as accuracy, Google often takes me to Wikipedia! Nuff said!

You said it! Just watch the oil discussions. Some people even though they know nothing talk as if they know it all.

If everyone used google, there would be fewer posts on YT. Except for:
Is the wire ground or neutral?
What is my tractor worth, no pic?
My chainsaw won't start.
What is the best_________?(you fill in the blank)
Joke of day!

It's too early for me to think this hard, others can continue the list.

Gee, havent you guys seen the TV commercial where the young babe tells some dude "They cant put anything on the Internet that isn't true" (and where did she read that) Of course, "On the Internet" Bonjour

Once my 20 something daughter was here and spilled some wine on the sofa, she got all worried and excited and wanted to know what to use to clean it and she yells at me "Dad, Go Google it"

That's funny, my 12 year old granddaughter told me the same thing, JUST GOOGLE IT!

She even got a smart phone for her last birthday and I'm not smart enought to use one.

Giving a smart phone to a 12-year-old doesn't sound very smart to me. Now she has her attention fully diverted from what she is supposed to be learning in school.

Local news station showed teenage girls skipping school yesterday to stand in line all day for some concert last night. What parent is stupid enough to allow that????

But a google search often leads right back to the question on Tractor Talk. This site has a powerful influence on goggle searches.

What's really spooky about Google is that I can look up something on the computer in the kitchen. And then later go to Google on my Android phone to look up something else, but Google on the phone already knows what I was looking up on the kitchen computer. Hmm..... I wonder if Google on my wife's phone does the same thing. :)

Back when I was a Ford Service Manager, a fellow called me once from 20 miles away, said there was anti-freeze dripping off the right side of the engine in his F-250 pickup, and asked me where it was coming from.

Of course, I had to play it straight and tactfully tell him he'd have to bring it to our shop and let us check it out, instead of spouting off the first answer that came to mind.

They can't put any thing on the internet that isn't true.
If someone believes that, I have sum ocean front property in Kansas to sell.

Google will get you something but I sure woulden't call it facts.

I hear google it all the time from my kids. Funny how they call the old man when there's an actual problem that requires a smidgen of smarts.

Then again if you do try Google you'll find you're directed here to YT for the answer plenty of times. Reckon us old timers ain't quite so dumb after all.

One time someone asked me if I ever "googled" myself...I thought it was kind of a personal question.

Using google to get facts is like asking the guys at the bar for opinions.

Once in a while you will get exactly the right answer, much of the time you get someones opinion and the rest of the time you are fed a line of manure designed to sell you somthing.

Google gets you access to the infomation. You have to be smart enough to decide which is fact and which is slanted Hype. I do not go to google for opinions (but there are many there)I go to google for data to help me make up my own mind.

If I want to know the average price of gasoline month by month over the last 20 years it is there. If I want to know the average price of corn over the last 20 years it is there. If I want to know the unemployment rate in my county, it is there.

Alternatively, one can tune in to the talk shows and let someone else slant the facts and TRY to tell them what to think.

I have googled some questions that I would have ask on this site and will get the archives responses from here. Did it last night and got some of SweetFeet's pictures that showed it completely.

(quoted from post at 10:15:02 09/17/14) I use wikipedia a lot.

Then you should be careful if the information involves any risk to you, physical of financial. IE- don't put money on something you read on Wikipedia because there's a fair chance the info isn't exactly correct. It;s common to find rumor stated as fact on Wikipedia, especially if it's historical type stuff.

[b:5391f92591]Google tracks everything you do[/b:5391f92591] on the internet, so they can push advertising at you and collect a percentage on any referred sites you visit.

[b:5391f92591]For goodness sake use Ixquick instead.[/b:5391f92591] No tracking to push ads at you or sell your info to others.

You can also use the "settings" button at the top of the page on Ixquick to display a list of to 100 sites in a single list, instead of going to page after page on Google to do an extensive search, and watching a bunch of ads pop up on every page.
