1976 IH loadstar not starting when hot...

OK guy, need a little help here, my old grain truck has a IH 404 in it, and always starts from cold ok (once you let the electric fuel pump run for a few seconds and as long as you pump the gas pedal a few times while the engine turns over), anyway the last few days it has not started when it is at operating temperature, the first time after i shut it off to fuel up and the second time it stalled while unloading grain...

The started turns it over fine, and sometimes the engine will fire while the key is turned to start, but once the key is released the engine dies, this makes me wonder if it is electrical.

Once the engine runs then everything runs great no lack of power or missing.

Ideas??

I've got a 74 IH 1600 and had a lot of trouble with the electric fuel pumps, finally went back to manual on it. I'm guessing the 404 is a gas motor? I know on my 345 sometimes it won't start but I can put it in gear turn the starter over so it will move the truck about a foot then push the clutch in, when you do that the starter will spin over a lot faster and it always fires for me. Could be the key switch?? you might wiggle the key the next time you have it running and see if the truck sputters or dies

If it has the same electronic module that was used in the Scouts of that vintage they were noted for that. I have a friend whta had a scout that I believe may have had that motor in it, and he kept a spare module bolted to the fender beside the main one so he could just change plugs.

Does sound like an electrical problem. Is this electronic ignition or points?

Either way, sounds like it's loosing spark when the starter is released. Could be the ignition resistor, (wire or ballast), ignition switch, or wiring problem.

Could also be weak spark delivery, as in worn plugs, bad wires, dist cap or rotor.

Where is the electric pump wired in? If it's connected to the coil, try moving it to another 12v source. It will draw down the voltage to the coil if it uses a resistor and deprive the pump of full voltage.

You find out let me know! I have an old Dodge dump truck with a 361 that dose the same thing, Drive it 10 miles or a 100 miles once you shut it off it wont start for 20 to 30 min till it cools off. When its hot it has a hot spark and getting fuel but it will not hit! I wont even hit on either! I replaced the key switch, starter, resistor, plugs wires dist cap points and condenser and coil. Checked all the electrical wires with a meter for correct voltage and they are all good. The timing was checked and is correct. Moved the fuel line and then wraped it with tin foil, No real help. The only thing that helped was wooden cloths pins on the fuel line, Why it helped I don't have a clue. Its been like this for 10 years and I have learned to live with it this way. Bandit
