OT- Unique marriage proposals

If anyone hasn't seen Ken Christopherson's post below, "Out for a Ride. . .", take a look. Very cute marriage proposal during a tractor parade.

Which brings to mind- have you been involved in a unique marriage proposal? Ever witnessed one?

Mine was nothing really special- the future Mrs. (WA) and I had just watched "The African Queen" on TV, which is a great love story, and it was just kind of spontaneous- I didn't have a ring or anything. We were both poor as church mice (college students), so couldn't afford one, anyhow.

#2 son had his girlfriend of 4 years or so at his graduation from Washington State U, along with both sets of parents and various siblings, etc. After graduation, he said "I've got tables reserved at the Student Union for a celebration." So we all walked up the hill. Just before we got there, he said he wanted to show Karryn the view- as he walked by, he said quietly "Kodak moment comin' up". And at the viewpoint, went down on one knee, etc. I guess she said Yes, because there was much kissing thereafter. Their 3 kids are 8, 6 and 2.

#1 son and #3 son-in-law both asked their prospective fathers-in-law for their daughters' hand in marriage, but the proposals were not public. For my part, I managed to keep a straight face and play along with the solemnity of the moment.

My cousin spent an entire day measuring in the wheat stubble and disked the proposal in early one morning. A friend took them up for a plane ride that morning while the soil was still fresh.

Sometimes it works the other way. Girl from my home town married a college student and worked 2 jobs to pay his way through med school. At graduation, he walked down off the stage with his diploma and served divorce papers on her with the comment: "I don't need you anymore".

When the local guys that she grew up with found out about it, they went looking for the guy but he had already fled the state. She was a nice girl that didn't deserve that kind of treatment; those friends of hers would have beat him to a pulp.

Around 48 or so years ago I had this neat scenic historic sight near Madison Indiana (Clifty Falls State Park) all picked out to "pop the question" but that didn't go so well, so I had another site near West Baden Springs Hotel (The Dome) and that did the trick, gee she's one lucky woman to have landed me when several had expressed interest in the position lol!!!

I also asked her father for permission, and his insight on me joining his family - and did so while fishing in a canoe. It could have very easily ended badly with me at the bottom of the lake, but thankfully he was proud to have me join his family.

On with the wedding planning...

Harsh.

Sounds similar to what my son went trough.
As soon as she had bled his 150 grand savings account dry she filed for divorce.

I did not have much of a choice.
I got her pregnant,...she was 17.
Wedding day was a complete disaster.

We are still together 42 years later.
We never had the honey moon yet..,...maybe someday.

My girlfriend of 3 years was one of those once in a lifetime kind of relationships. She had expressed that she didn't have any intrests in getting married again or even having a live in boyfriend for that part. She had been married twice prior. She broke things off with me. Said she wanted to go back to school full time, and didn't want to be involved with anyone. I found out a year to the day later, that she was getting re-married. And to someone from her past which she said she would never do. The last word I heard about her was she quit her job, and has given up on going to school. I have really had a tuff time excepting it all. But have had no choice. I can relate to how this gal feels that you are talking about. Why can't people just be honest, and not be so cruel??

Mine did not take it seriously. Just glad she finally agreed. That has been 33 years. 2 daughters, and six grand babies later. LIFE IS GOOD.

My cousin likes to drink beer in a glass from out of the freezer. So one weekend when his girlfriend was going to be there, he had placed one glass in the freezer with of course the ring in it. When he came into the house that weekend after doing some stuff outside, he sat in the recliner and asked his girlfriend if she would get him a beer. She went to the freezer, got out the frosty glass, got a beer out of the fridge, opened it and dumped it in the frozen glass, brought it to him and never even noticed the ring in it. He had to then drink the beer before he could propose to her. I had a girlfriend one time that said if you really loved me, you wouldn't drink so much. I said if I didn't drink so much, I don't think I would really love you. LOL

Bison,
Very simular senario here. The wifey and I started dateing when she was 14. We started a family when she was 17. We celebrated our 48th aniversery back in August, and have never second guessed our comitment to each other. It did take a while for both of our parents to accept our comitment to each other, but they came together when their first grand child took his first breath.

After we'd dated for about a year and a half, my wife and I just kind of drifted into talking about getting married. Once when the subject came up, she said, "How do you know I'll marry you? You haven't asked me yet".

I said, "This is your last chance to chicken out. Are you going to marry me?

She said, "Yes". That will be 49 years ago next month.

Told the wife when I was 20 that we could get hitched but, first... She had to get a drivers license , and pay off her student loan. very romantic eh? We got married when I was 21, 32 years ago this Nov. A deal is a deal, she kept her part , and I kept mine. Fortunately , the MRS. put no such conditions on me . Bruce

I asked my wife 35 years ago, I have proposed every year same day same time, City girl took to farm life like a duck to water...best Friend

Forty one years ago I said "I have vacation coming up in two weeks, Is that enough time to plan a wedding?" She said "Sure" I went off for a trail bike ride and she went into my apartment to call everyone. two weeks later we were on the honeymoon.

I guess I lucked out, I made the one to this wife over the phone while out on the road in the truck, she accepted

Unknown to her I did formally ask my bride's parents.
I proposed at 10:30AM on April 1st while we were sitting on the JD 70 .

Hopefully in a couple months I can add to this page but as for now I have to wait to ask her parents for permission. We both moved away from our parents. I live an hour and half from mine and she lives 3 hours from her parents. I plan to have them all come out for a dinner on the anniversary of our first date then ask her then and there. Hopefully she will say yes.

James and I had our first date on Dec. 19, 1987. It was love at first sight. We married 3 months later.

No unique proposal, but I told him it better be eyeball to eyeball, no kneeling.

A friend and his wife were both getting their accounting degrees. They agreed that he would work while she finished her CPA. After she got her CPA, she served him with divorce papers.

When I was 17 and my wife was 15 we were still in High School.
I took her home from a date and told her that I loved her. Next thing I know, she is planning our wedding that she decided would be in about two years!
So I guess I missed the opportunity to propose LOL!
Just as well---still in love with each other after 49 years, three kids and eight grandchildren!!
