Apple cider

We picked 3-4 bushels of apples today and got the cider press out. We used a combination of Golden delicious, Johnathan, and Rome beauty. We got 8 gallons, 2 we'll let turn to vinegar, we kept one for drinking right away and the rest went into the freezer for foture enjoyment.

I just was at an event today, where they gave me a gallon of apple juice , this was pressed today. What is the procedure for vinegar ? . thanks, Murray

I have a cider press like that one that I am in the process of restoring. I have the baskets rebuilt, but that is as far as I have gotten. There's not much left of the wood to use as a pattern to make new pieces. Would you mind sending me a few more photos of yours?

I had a pickup box full two days ago and made cider, got about 40 gallons, drank some so far rest is in freezer, my press is similar to yours but my grinder I made it has a electric motor, one person dumps them in as I push them down with a board, works good. I got right at a gallon of juice from about two five gallon buckets. What do you use to press it with, I use a 40 ton press

I found an old juice press this summer and hope to use it to make hard cider if I ever get the chance to get some apples that is

To make vinegar, all we do is leave in a jug, plastic or glass loosely covered at room temp. It will go for sweet to hard cider and then to vinegar. It just takes time, about 2 months. You may want to filter it before using. It will only be hard cider for a short period before turning to vinegar. When I was growing up, Dad use to make about 30 gallons of cider for vinegar a year with this press. I have 8 brothers and sisters, so Mom did a lot of canning.

Can you please post some more pictures of that press?! I have one identical to it. Dates 1860 or 1890 something? It was torn apart and has a section of the cast broken out of it. I plan to rebuild it here soon but haven't found the time. I'll open my email as well. I would really appreciate it. Thank you!

Mine is probably about the same age. It belonged to my great grand father who was a Civil War Veteran.
