Small Diesel Tractor Fuel System

I have a Ford 1120. Its been sitting for 6+ years. The PO said it run, but was told something in the fuel system needed cleaning. The tank is empty and rusty. I can get clean fuel to the injector pump. Should I then try to start it, or do anything to the injector lines and injectors? Any help greatly appreciated.

Hello,

If you can feed the pump with clean fuel go ahead and see if it will start. You will need to bleed the fuel lines. Crack them at the injectors fittings while cranking the engine. I bet it will start for you. Keep us posted,

Guido.

Change the fuel filter first, then as Guido says. It will probably fire up.

If I remember right, you have to move the throttle lever forward from the stop to get fuel through the small injection pump.

make sure the glow plugs are working, I think you have to engage them @ ignition switch & watch a glow indicator on dash--won't start without them-avoid start fluid on these little guys-

I have been re-doing a Ford 1910. They are hard starting tractors. Yes the throttle has to be open some. Glo, Crank, stop, Glo, crank, stop, Glo crank. Be ready to jump or have a charger. It will take a lot of cranking. The glo plugs only pull 10.5 Volts.

My moms 1900 will start in the summer with 10 seconds of glow. 45 seconds of glow down to 15 degrees or so and it will start.

My 1910 needs no glow till it hits 40 degrees or so and then just 20 seconds or so at 15 degrees.

I feel they both start good.

Its my BIL's. I get it running and sell it and we split it. I think I may like it too much and buy him out! It has a disc, bush hog and scrape blade. Its a 3 cyl. Gonna put a battery on it, unhook fuel line and make sure it will turn over tomorrow. Thanks for the quick replys.

We had one of those and two 1210's.The 10 series had mechanical shutoffs but the 20 series had an electric solenoid for the shutoff.Make sure you hear it click when you turn the key on.Had the misfortune of running all out of fuel at least once(sons and hired help) ,but never had to bleed the injectors to get them to start. That's not to say you won't have to if it's sat for a while

First take the filter off and turn on the valve to see if you have flow.If it's sat awhile it might be stiff.Be careful because it is pot metal and will break.Look to see if the o ring has a flat spot on it.You might have to replace it.Change the paper filter and make sure the bowl is clean. The fine threads on the collar and base will strip pretty easy so be careful.

Loosen the bleed screw at the pump and let it flow till all the bubbles are gone.If I remember right it's a 12mm.Light the glow plugs and open the throttle all the way and strart crankin.Like someone else said NO ETHER.

The only problem with those tractors was they got hot easy.Keep the grill clean.Good Luck.

No.

If the tank is rusty, it must be replaced.

You must have reliably clean fuel to the pump to avoid expensive damage to the pump and injectors.

Changing the filter without replacing a rusty tank is a (very) short term solution.

If the tank is bad it's pretty easy to rig up a temporary tank for it too.
This one is off some small engine. I've had it clamped or wired onto several tractors to test them.

I've done that with gas many times Ultradog, thanks for the reminder. Poured kerosene in it and its running thru the filter and looks clean but I will change the filter and tank to start it. I agree Dean but @ this point that may have happened before me. I will @ least clean the tank very well.

I have clean fuel to the injector pump, bled the top of the injector pump and opened the line at the injectors. There is no fuel at the injectors(completely dry). The solenoid has power and is clicking. I have the throttle open. There is a lever with a large hole in it, in front of the injector lines on the pump. What is it for?

Some of those Shibauras were pretty much impossible to get some parts for. A friend had maybe a 1310, and it had a steering problem that he could not fix due to Inavailability of parts. I don't think that he ever got it fixed.
