I have trailer mounted welder powered with what I believe is a jeep military engine. The engine has JEEP cast in the flat head, has side mount distriburator. Welder does not spark. The engine runs very well . Can I repolerize the generator by hooking 12 volt battery to the receptical? I am at a loss as what to do with this machine.E bay seems to not have any section for this thing. Should I try to sell the engine to someone restoring an older military jeep as I do have a military 4x4 transmission from another project? I have been unsuccessful in finding web sites of folks restoring older (1942 to 1960 )jeeps. The welder is like something of a dinosaur as to modern welders. Lots of copper in the thing, however have not found any one wanting old generator for even parts. How is best way to get the thing repolerized or is it even possible? Kinda hate to scrap it for the copper.

Probably not a polarity problem, the problem is the contacts or brushes there on the end. Need to get some sand paper and work on those contacts.j

jm. has a good point, the armature may need cleaning where the brushes make contact. I always use 400 or finer silicon carbide. The brushes themselves may be worn out or stuck in their holder, or even a broken wire.If there is a brand name on it, you may find information on it by using Google. Since there is a lot of copper, it would likely be a better unit if repaired, than many units of today. I wouldn't start talking "scrap" just yet.

Where in Indiana, I have Family in the Lake Michigan area. I might be interested in the trans, I own a CJ3B daily driver. Jim

Go to g503.com. I bet someone there would be interested in it, that site is dedicated to the military jeep.

Mirom Institute country. I went to VU in 78-79.
If it would fit my Jeep, I might be interested. If for sale, and if within budget. Jim

I agree with ShadetreeRet and jm find the name of the generator could be a Lincoln or Miller welder and be worth more as a welder than parting it out.

I've got one.. Willys flathead motor in Hobart welder.. The brushes are well known to be stuck in brush holders.. Free them up and it will work like new.. There are 2 sets.. Free them both up..
