building round bale un-roller

So im thinking about making a bale un-roller similar to the one in this video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=miLsTGCZqqU&index=1&list=UU2YWaV4kWn0ClHnqtaAovmQ

its going to be 3 point hitch for now but maybe converted to loader at a later date.

So a few things id like others opinions on,

Is 1-1/2" shaft big enough for the main shaft?

How do I decide what size hydraulic motor to use?

Ive got everything but the bearings and the motor so it wont take much to put this thing together now.
Bale un roller

unless you are using actual bale spears or truck axles 1 1/2 will bend.
the unverferth RA-220 round about uses a 2 1/4 by 5 foot shaft. and the tag on the hyd motor

I expect you will be able to buy one of these units used cheaper than you can make one and it will also wrap bales.

if you look at the first few seconds of the video I posted, im talking about the shaft that is maybe a foot long. it will go through a 4x4 of steel tube, have a sprocket on one end, and 2 plates welded to the other end. The plates will hold 2 sleeves that a standard square spear goes into.

I just use a chainsaw and split the bale down one side. The old weathered hay is first on the ground, so it's usually waste anyway.

I thought the unroller was too fast and jerky. Another idea is to use a combine final drive, driven by a hyd motor. Mount the bale spear on the drive hub where the wheel would be. Built in speed reducer.

Just put the bales out in the field, that way you don't need another contraption that can/will break

This is what I use. It's pretty simple and would be easy to build

For those that don't know, some areas have too much mud to "just set out the bale". I set out some bales but last year I lost 2 calves that got stuck in the mud. Also by rolling out the bales, you can build up your ground because the manure is spread "automatically" :D

What several guys around here have done is make a normal looking single spear bale carrier. Then take two pillow block bearings that will slide over the spear. Then make a flat plate about three foot in diameter with a hole in the center to go over the bale spear. They then take a large sprocket ( The one that drive the reel on a JD combine works well and the hydraulic motor is sized right for it too) mount it on a brake to the back of the plate. You put a bearing on each side of the plate. They just cut the center out of the sprocket and mounted it under the bolts that went through the pillow block bearings and the plate. So you have your turn table. Then you weld several spikes to the plate. Make a mount for your hydraulic motor to line up with the sprocket.

I know I have not described this very well but I have attached a picture of a factory built one that works the same way. They basically turn the bale around the center spear. The guys with them have used them for years without issues.
