First different pickup in 23 years

I finally gave in yesterday and bought a different pickup. Went to a fleet sale with 23 Ford pickups on it and came home with my second choice. An 07 F250 4x4 gas. 190,000 miles, tow package with the integrated trailer brake,I guess anyway according to the manual and paperwork. I've got the complete service records on it. Had new ball joints a year ago. There are records from a Ford dealer in California and it has a little bit of hail damage to the hood,so I don't think it's from around here. I got it for $5250. Made me nervous because there were at least three dealers there buying them up and most were bringing 8-9 thousand, with a few at 10 or more. Made me wonder what I missed when I looked it over.
The one I really went for ended up being the last one sold and I didn't want to risk coming home empty handed. Good thing I got this one. The other one was an 01 F450 4x4,crew cab 4 door with a 7.3 diesel,6 speed manual. I was thinking $8500 all along on that one until I saw it. I didn't think it was much of a step up from what I had when I got a look at it. They said it needed glow plugs, but it looked like they had been messing with solenoids and there was a sticker on the dash that said to plug it in. If it was an easy fix, you'd have thought they'd have done it. The brake pedal went almost to the floor,it had a dent in the drivers side rear door and the tires weren't the best. There was no gooseneck ball or even a hole in the deck of the flatbed for one. I thought $5000 would be plenty for it but it brought 9.

That really looks nice. I'm curious, it seems a F250 is a far way from a F450. Is the F250 going to meet your needs? Will you be towing a gooseneck and if so will this truck handle it? Paul

I think it'll be OK on the stock trailer. It's just a 16 foot. I haul 4 fats at a time in it.

This is what I'm partially replacing. An F250 with a gutless naturally aspirated 6.9 diesel. I put a pair of dual wheel adapters from JC Whitney on it and put two extra leafs in the springs. I'm gonna leave this one plated and insured and just use it for hauling hay from the field, haul silage wagons and to haul the stock trailer for moving cattle around right here at home. Gonna have to add on to the garage so I can get them both inside though. lol

Keep your eyes open on Sykora's web site if you can wait until next summer. The have that Mears Group sale up to Rosebush every year. It's usually in June, but they got backed up this year. There are generally 25-35 trucks on it,this year was a little lean with only 23. Scott said the Fords would all be cycled out in a few more years. They sold 06-09s this year. He said they've only been buying Dodges since 11.

Wow 23 years, i thought I was bad holding on to my truck for 16 years which still runs great. Don't know which will give out first me or the truck!

Nice! Shocking what dealers will pay for things they have to resell and make money on. You wouldn't think there were that many people out there who give double what they could pay at an auction.

Just be sure to have a shop that actually uses the shop manual when it's time to install new spark plugs. Ford gets a bad reputation for spark plugs blowing out of the aluminum cylinder heads but it almost always boils down to a plug replacement by a jackleg mechanic that thought torque specs were not important.

All modern LD trucks are known for snapped exhaust studs because of the different cooling rates of manifolds and cylinder heads. The Ford is no worse than the other big two brands, but their wide "V" engine makes the replacement of the studs a real bear which means most of them have exhaust leaks at the manifold/cylinder head.

I have a 08 F350 SRW with a V10 and have been more than happy with its service. I hope you have the same experience.

Unfortunately we can't seem to drive a vehicle that many years. We traded one in Feb, gas 350 with 313,000 on the clock. We had it for over 180,000 of those miles. Took us 5 years to put that kinda mileage on it. 16 years is impressive!

Thanks Randy.
I wait Sykora fairly often. I still have two trucks going, but I need to replace the one sooner or later, so I like to start looking ahead of time.

Sharp looking ride.
And SWMBO wonders why I would be willing to put $3000 into my 85 W150 Dodge with 3/4T rear suspention. (Cuz I can work on it) Instead I bought a 95 Madza B2300 that I can't work on!

Good looking truck, good price too. I thought you said at blanchard you where going to that sale and wondered if you came home with something. Hope it runs good for you.

I have a 99 F-550 with the 7.3 diesel/6 speed have done very little to it except routine stuff oil change, filters etc.153,000 it rides and drives like the day I bought it new.

Sharp looking truck. I've been happy with my '08.
Had to have a couple of things replaced recently that the
dealer said are fairly common failures on these models.
Four wheel drive IWE solenoid, Fuel pump driver module
and the Fuel injector driver module. Both of those modules
were still working but the housings were corroding away.
The IWE solenoid made a buzzing noise under moderate
acceleration and the truck felt like it was in four wheel drive
all the time.
Not too bad for 6 years and 120K miles I guess.
I hope you get great service from yours.

I had a 70 chev Blazer that I drove till 96, and still sold it for good money with a plow. It had all the heavy options, 3 leaf fronts, dual batteries, 4 speed 12 inch clutch etc, but no fancy like carpet or ps or pb. Pulled a lot of wagons, plowed a lot of snow and hauled a lot of calves. Never put a clutch in or had the heads off. I don't think I would ever buy a truck with that high of mileage, but thats just me, good luck with your new truck.

Volume. lol
I heard one tell the ringman that he had bought six, wanted a few more. I saw two others buy two each and were still bidding right along on them after I bought this one.

I have a 03 F250 4x4 regular cab that I bought new. It's got around 140k on it now. Other than 1 set of brakes, ball joints, and one battery I haven't touch it other than oil changes about every 5000 miles. It's been a good truck but the 5.4 ain't no power house. It will pull my loaded 24' enclosed trailer with two Ford tractors in it but that's about all it wants and that's down here on this flat ground. I get around 14 mpg back and forth to work but hook the boat or the big trailer to it and it will drop below 10. All in all it's been a dang reliable truck. I wouldn't be afraid of one with 190k on it if it was taken care of

Is that the 5.4? I had a 150 with that in it with200,000 miles and it was still good. I just traded it on an 05 f350 with the v-10 and 6 spd with 107,000 on it. I wish I had the auto trany but otherwise it's a good truck so far. This one gets a bit over 10 mpg driving and I got just under 8 on that 1,300 mile trip with a fully loaded 20k gooseneck. I paid a lot mor for mine tho. Lol. Looks like you got a good deal.

Bless You, I hope yours is better than mine was. 2000 single rear wheel F-350. Really nice truck, about 170,000 miles, good white paint, not one speck of rust, really nice interior. You could not keep gas in it. About 10-11 empty, 6-8 with a 16' cattle trailer. It was about the same as having a 1066 International with a T/A delete. Finally got rid of it and got another Cummins. They might be ok in the F-150's but not in a work truck.

Wish it was a V10,but ya,it's a 5.4. I haven't heard great things about them,except they're better than a 6.0 diesel,and that ain't sayin much.

2510Paul:

I pull a 40 foot 5th wheel Travel Trailer, with an '88 GMC 2500 5.7L Extended Cab Long Box 4x4 with manual 4+OD . His truck should pull a Gooseneck with NO problems.

Doc :>)

Good luck with it, hope it serves you well. I"m still running the "84 GMC I bought back in "86. Or what"s left of it!

We run vehicles over 20 years quite often, who can afford new?!! Rust is what kills them up here.

I just got a 97 F350 4dr/4wd with the 351 auto. Not much extra other than a/c which I don't use anyway. Got to say, it's a pretty decent decent rig. 11-12mpg around town, plenty of room, all the carrying capacity I need and then some. I'm not Fords biggest fan but I like it. If they'd just design a decent seat it'd be perfect.

190 sounds like a lot, but anymore it's not so bad.. My sales car is a 08 Impala that now sports 217,000 miles and going strong..
