Electrical Grounding Again

I have been reading a lot of posts about grounding. I had assumed that a utility transformer grounded through the primary being grounded. Now I read from John T.'s post that it is not. Other than lightning, what would be the risk of removing all grounding.

BOTH the HV Primary as well as the LV Secondary Neutrals are earth grounded (we used every 3rd pole),,,,,,,,At the utility Transformers the LV Neutral is earth grounded,,,,,,,,,At the main service entrance disconnect the LV Neutral are again earth grounded. This keeps the grid at one common low voltage reference and helps reduce surges and spikes from lightning or users when say a huge motor is shut down. Without all that there are more risks of stray and surge currents and spikes, the purpose is to stabilize everything at one common low volt 0 reference so stray current isnt trying to flow all over the place from one to other countless multiple potentials........

Best I have......

John T in the RV on the road from 5 MILES NORTH OF STODDARD WISCONSIN just south of La Crosse (That better Bob???) Wisconsin folk are forcing me to consume adult beverages and eat fried greasy fish n chicken, eat cheese n Brats, watch Football and NASCAR and run around LOL (Lovin every minute of it too)

..........and if I may add, 'total isolation', while perhaps seeming ideal, is impossible to achieve in anything but the tiniest system, as stray capacitive & inductive coupling will destroy the 'total isolation' and you still get shocked.

Good point, I agree, for example, mutual inductance and capacitance between parallel conductors can yield a voltage above earth potential if you're running wires a great distance and Im sure enough energy and voltage to get shocked grrrrrrrrrrr If you run a 4 wire system out to a remote barn the Ground is again tied back to earth to reduce potential from tools or appliances out there so you or old Bossie don't get shocked when you touch them...

Fun sparky chattin with ya.....

Hey John,

I have nothing to add about your grounding discussion, just wondering if you are in the Goose Island Campground?

That's my home stomping grounds. Grew up a couple of "Coulees" over to the Northeast, probably 4-5 miles as the crow flies, but 9-10 via roads.

What takes you to that part of the country? My family moved away while I was in college and I transplanted to PA so haven't been back there for 20+ years.

Kirk

I think were like a stones throw just South of Goose Island on 35 at a friends house. In fACT WERE headed there in like 30 minutes to look around. Were here to visit the Shrine of Guadalupe and our RV friends (who drag me kickin n screamin to local beer joints lol) then back to Indiana for a Bluegrass Festival then a couple more minor trips before Florida after Christmas, yayyyyyyyy life is good, we have been blessed.

John T

There is no shortage of beer joints in that part of the country. At least that's how I remember it...

Enjoy your time in "God's Country" (as the locals used to call it).

Kirk

John T was not able to get you and George Marsh together at Elnora. I have a question that possibly you two can clear me up on. In a conversation when one has no opinion either way should one say they are GROUNDED or neutral???At a funeral do we say the body is in neutral or in the ground??? Hey old friend have a great time.

Everything would work but nothing would operate. The circuits would work but in a fault the breakers may not operate.

Kirk were you from over in Barre Mills area? I have poor old John T in a choke hold and forcing him to drink beer and eat fried food.

Bob

Had to look at Google Earth for an answer. Remembered Barre Mills, but couldn't come up with a relative location from memory.

If you draw a line from Goose Island to Barre Mills I lived about half way up the line on Hagen Road. No farms or tractors in the neighborhood. I was a town kid.

Kirk

Kirk thanks for the reply I know right where Hagan rd. is. I live south of LaCrose between Stoddard and Chaseburg off on a side road.

Bob

Bill,
Tell the truth, you wanted me to see you at Elnora because you couldn't get JohnT to fix your battery charger. You wouldn't let me leave unless I took your broken charger with me. Did your boy get charger back to you?
George
