hammer mill belts

Where can you get belts to run a hammer mill or buzz saw off a tractor belt pulley and how much do they on average cost?

I bought 4 lengths of old bailer belting. I connected 2 of them together making a heck of a long thresher belt. I run it off the buzz saw, and I find that the long length helps somehow. It dosent slap as much, and seems to absorb a pinch in the log being cut better than a short belt. I have another that I just put together end to end, but it turned out to be too short for my buzz saw setup. BUT its dang handy when I want to start, or tune up another tractor, belting 2 tractors together. Lots better than trying to work on them while pulling them.

What will work on a buzz saw will not work on a hammermill because of size of pullys. The saw will have a 6" diameter or larger pully on and that will acomidate the belt lacing for a spliced belt, now the hammermill has a 4" diameter pully on it and that lacing will not follow the small diameter of the hammermill pully without tearing the lacing out. Also it cannot be a canvas type belt as they will also not work on the small diameter of the hammermill pully. Cannot comment on quality of baler belt as have never been around but I still have 2 buzz saws and did a lot of feed grinding with a hammermill belt. Ruined our corn shreader belt (laced belt) by putting it on the hammer mill. You need a endless rubber belt for the hammer mill. And if you can find a good one (questionable) used it will be over a hundred dollars. Also a Hammer mill belt should be longer than a stationary saw belt and the 3 point saw the belt is about 9', front tractor mount saw about 20' all depending on tractor and saw model. And to measure a belt you measure total length and not one side. And to buy new endless belts they are figgured on length before splice and that makes them 3' shorter than specified length.

My 7in wide side load Wetmore has a 7in by 5dia pulley. Ive used the same belts for the buzz saw as I have for the hammermill.

I suppose the smaller the hammermill, the smaller the pulley length and dia.

I don't have a saw and haven't run a belt run hammermill since I was a kid so all I'm doing is asking. Could you splice baler belts by overlaping them and using elevator belt bolts?

Ive cut weod with a buzz saw since 69. EVERY YEAR. ive used spliced belts for at least 30yrs. Ive even drilled holes in the belt with a drill and laced them with leather thong.
These bailer belts are smooth on one side and grooved on the other, making for a better, but noisier grip, as the belt has to be 1/2 turned on the saw, and turned twice, due to the side of the hammermill im on, on the hammermill.

Most people seemed to think that a shorter belt is needed on a buzz saw. I did, cause dad did, and im using the saw my granddad gave dad for a wedding present in 40. There wrong, I think. Using 2 lengths of bailer belt puts me roughly 30/40ft away from the saw, and I say it runs smoother on a long belt.

What I have seen are for a 6" wide belt and 4" in diameter. And a belt that sat tractor about 15-18' away from saw was better than one that sat it 25' away due to on a longer needing a saw staked harder to be able to get the belt tight. And on the 3 point or front tractor mount you run a straight belt with no twists. Just had the leather-canvas or the rubber endlass belts. Never have had a baler belt to see one. But on a 4" diameter pully that lacing is going to want to bent to conform to the pully and then straighten out when it is off the pully.

Thanks everyone we have an old hammer mill in the barn and was wondering about a belt to run I just used a buzz saw as something else that runs off a belt pulley

The #10 Deere hammer mill we used to run had at least a 6" wide pulley. I still have the belt. I'll have to measure it. Jim

OT but had to add. I bought this farm in '79 as my first rural experience. I had a 3 generation farmer friend up the road that just loved to pull tricks on me since I was the new guy to farming and was illiterate essentially.

However on this occasion I had some corn stalks and had acquired a fair sized mill from somewhere but had no way to power it. I asked for his help and he was quick to oblige. He said he would be over the next day "bright and early".

I think it was 6 am sharp and I hear his tractor passing the house. I hurriedly dress and get out there to do my part. He had about a 20' belt, I think it was about 6" wide and a JD B as I recall.

He hooked it to the mill and wound up the Deere. The sound was pretty intense and the old popper was a poppin with the mill a screaming.

At his motion I started feeding the stalks and it was a "gulp" gone, ready for another. He explained to me that with the large flywheel on that tractor and the 20' length to the belt he had a tremendous amount of kinetic energy stored in both and when a wad of stalks hit the blades, it was a piece of cake to eat em up.

I was impressed.
