Stuck and troubled at the Rock River show!! Steam engine

I got to see a rare thing the first afternoon at the Rock River Show. A steam engine, A Minneapolis steam engine that got stuck while plowing. WOW They had a pretty tough plowing knob at the end of the field. It was gravel dirt and small rocks. Just a few turns of the wheels had it down to its belly. They tried to pull it out with another steam engine but just broke their pull strap. They finally got it out by digging under it by hand and using a track hoe to pull it out.

Here is a long shot of their trouble.

Here you can see that the fire box is about on the ground.

Here is the eight bottom plow. It is a little different in that it has a mechanical lift. The handles are to adjust the plow depth individually.

Here is view of the back. The only damage is just to the flat iron step board brackets. They had them straightened out when I saw the same engine Saturday.

Here they are trying to use another steam engine to pull the first one out.

Many times the "unplanned" things are the most memorable ones.

I see they got the plow out of the ground, if they
would have moved it out of the way and hooked to
the back of the engine it would have popped out
easy.

I remember they had one stall on the parade and they used
a cat to move that one.at least i wasnt the only one digging
this weekend found a sinkhole in the hayfield same size as
the front end of the tractor it dropped in real nice 2 hrs
digging for me.

Just think what that would have been like "Back in
the day". Maybe the only steamer in the county,
nothing but horse and manpower to get it out.

that was my first thought too Harold.

Time to give up farming and build a saw mill around it where it sits!

Horse and man power - the best use of the man power would be to get on a shovel and start digging.

My dad put us boys on the end of a shovel several times rather than let us hook up to a bigger to tractor to pull us out of the mess we had gotten our selves into. 3-4 hours of digging in mud and breaking your back digging under a tractor made you a LOT more careful where you were going. Wasted a lot of time making us dig but probably saved him a lot of time and money on repairs in the long run with the lesson learned.

I have dug out, jacked, and cribbed up modern tractors, also bulldozers and trucks. Not a lot of fun, especially working alone or in bad weather.

Very neat pictures. I remember dad always saying the older steel wheeled tractors with lugs would dig like a spade if they got stuck so a person had to be careful.
