New Holland L175 Skidloader.....engine problem

I have a NH L175 skidloader that needs an engine overhaul (diesel) Haven't pulled it yet or anything but the dealer is recommending a $7400 (plus labor) re-man to stick in. Wondering if anyone out there would know how to get a hold of a decent used engine or economic parts for us to overhaul ourselves.

Been down that road. We got an engine from salvage yard. Big mistake. It was the same engine but spent a lot of time switching oil pan, water pump, flywheel and other stuff. Same engine but different application. Finally got it running and the the thing wouldn't reeve up. Tried everything finally had to switch front cover and govenor. Big PITA. Turned out to be more expensive than the reman.

I do not know for sure what motor is in your skid steer but many of them do not have sleeves. So if it has much wear your going to have to have it bored out. So the overhaul is not going to be just sticking in a "KIT".

I would not install a used motor in one unless you know for SURE that the used motor actually is better than what you have. Most skid steers are run HARD so when they are junked/salvaged they are shot. Some times you might find a burnt one that is not high houred but they can be bad too.

Unless your just in love with that model of skid steer I would just update the entire machine. Everything else is worn too. So if you do rebuild the motor how long until the hydro goes out????

Cost wise I bet you can trade up to a better machine for about what it is going to cost you to rebuild yours.

This is one of those times where like it or not you might do well to LISTEN to the dealer.
Those engines are not cheap to OH. Used is a crap shoot... you might get a good one; you might get like what you got. With a reman you have new with a warranty.

The engine is a Shibaura N-884LT.
I found a place that I can get a major rebuild kit for ~$750. Does anyone have an idea of what I should expect to pay if it needs bored, crank ground, etc.?
