O.T. Portable air conditioner vs. Window unit

I have a portable 10,000 btu ac unit.I have a 7x7x7 work room that is all glass and this unit will not cool it down..Question: if I could get a window unit to work would that be a better option?..

If you are exhausting the condenser warm air outside now, a window unit won't do any more. If not, yes.

Those portable air conditioners have a couple of serious problems: They suck the cool air out of the room and discharge it outside, so they're constantly pulling warm air into the room. The other problem is the hot discharge hose, which radiates heat back into the room. If you can use a window unit, by all means do so.

Because our bedroom doesn't have a window, only a patio door, we suffered a portable unit for two or three years. It was very good at converting electricity to noise. Three years ago we installed a ductless ("mini-split") system and haven't looked back. Silent and efficient.

red bearing,

A definitive YES... a window unit will cool better! Husband and I both agree on that.

We had two 10,000 BTU portable units (bought them brand new)... had them exhaust out the windows - one upstairs one on main level.

Gave both to our daughter and bought an 8,000 BTU window units to replace them.

Window unit keeps it as cool if not cooler because it's not fighting itself (those portable units through A LOT of heat INSIDE your house) and one does not have the hassle of emptying the water out continually... the portable was literally filling a five gallon bucket with water DAILY.

While one does not have to empty them -- I believe they will only run on "dehumidify" until the water level in the reservoir goes down (they won't cool).

Perhaps you problem is the glass, which is a very good conductor of heat, not to mention radiant heat gain from the sun.

10,000 BTU will cool a very well insulated 900 ft home very easily on low.

You can't AC a poorly insulated room with all glass.

I retract my answer. Wasn't thinking about where the air going over condenser was coming from. What kind of caught my eye on the question took me back to when the guys out in the set up shop put a window air conditioner on a table to cool the area. Didn't work out very well.

Anything has to be better than those portable things. Had one for a month, gave it away and got central air. Don't regret it for a minute.

There are two types of portable air conditioners.
One uses room air to exhaust the heated air. This type has one hose / air tube to take heater air outside.
The other type has two hoses / air tubes - one to bring outside air in to go over the coils and the other to take the heated air back out. This type is actually quite good but more expensive. This type will also evaporate the condensate with the warm air exhaust. A few of these will also work as a heat pump heater on cool mornings.

Hi,

I recently purchased a used window air conditioner for hot summer days. On the other hand, I'm a bit confused about the exhaust tube and it how it functions concerning the windows.

(quoted from post at 20:23:51 12/18/14) Hi,

If you have a "window air conditioner" it should not have an exhaust tube.

If yours has an exhaust tube, it is a "portable air conditioner."

The function of the exhaust tube on a portable air conditioner is to funnel the hot air out the window to the outside.

Air conditioners don't magically make the air cold. They do it using science, by transferring the heat somewhere else, usually to the outdoors.

If you don't use the exhaust tube on your portable air conditioner, the air in the room will not cool down. You will feel cold air coming out of the air conditioner on one side, but you will feel HOT air coming out the other side. Hot and cold will mix back together, and you will end up with the same temperature as before, or hotter.
