Trailer tires

My buddy had one of the tires blow out on my big trailer last night. My boat trailer tire blew out after 10 years, now other trailer. We have planned to change out this winter.

I will not take a trailer on the road anymore with tires older than 6 years, they just get rotten.
 
I'm in the process of replacing the tires on my trailers. I just bought 6 tires for my equipment trailer. My stock trailer is next. I can still find good used tires for my utility trailer. The tires all looked OK but they are getting over 8 years old and I'm getting too old to worry about blowouts on the road. The tires that I bought were the cheapest I could find and don't have as deep of tread. I'll see how it works out but they may outlast me. Sunlight is the worst enemy of tires and my trailers all set outside.
 
I've been involved in the tire industry in the past, and have a couple of close friends that own tire stores. I still don't understand why my trailer tires have such a short life. Two years ago I replaced two tires on my 40' gooseneck, and last year replaced the other six. This trailer is used during the summer to haul my pullers, and in the fall for some plow days. I load it heavy, but never over the capacity of the tires. I had one fail last weekend, belt slipped (empty) and took a section out of the sidewall. The dealer did an adjustment, but it still was over $50 to replace. I never get much life out of tires on this trailer, or my little 16' enclosed. The tires on my '08 dually have over 70,000 miles, and are still good. I think I'm using truck tires on the gooseneck next time. It surely can't be any worse.
 
If your trailer sets a lot the tires will not last as long as trailer tires that are pulled a lot. My flatbed goosenecks get used weekly and loaded heavily. They last for many years without any troubles.

MY stock trailer may set for months between use and they will not last much over 2-3 years and the side walls are cracked. Same size and brand of tire as the flatbeds.

I wonder if the tire covers you see guys use on RVs would help????
 
Best explanation I heard was something like this; when a tire is used, it flexes. That allows the oils or compounds in the tire to warm up and more or less coat the tire again, protecting it from the elements, including the sun. When a tire sits, the oils in the rubber basically wash off and then the sun is free to wreak havoc on the tires.

That said it still seems like tires today just don't last as long. I swapped out some older bfg's that were on my old truck tonight because I'm selling it for parts, and those tires are still good enough for hay wagons. Some of the tires I put on are older than the truck itself I think.

The bfg's were left behind when I bought my house and they were the right size for me so I had them mounted on my truck. Probably 10 years old or better but were in a shed fora few years and non the worse for wear.

Guys, I have another question about trailer tires. Over the years, I've had more blowouts on horse trailer tires than I care to remember. A good friend said she now buys Load Range E truck tires for her horse trailer and has not had blowout issues since. I have Load Range E trailer tires. Supposedly, the trailer tires have sturdier side walls, but are not meant to be driven as fast (I have been told not over 65 mph) as true truck tires. Can anyone verify this? Would there be a downside to buying good truck tires in the same size for my trailer?
 
A couple of years ago when I got new tires for the gooseneck the dealer recommended pickup tires so I put pickup tires on it. I haven't used it enough since then to give them a test. Jim
 
Trailer tires are rated to 65MPH, but can be driven faster if inflated a little higher.

Thanks, David. I went to an RV forum and they said the same. The consensus there was to switch to LT tires when it's time to change, but to note that the load capacity at the same rating (Load Range E, for example) is less for LT tires than for ST tires. Get the proper capacity for the job, even if you need to move up a load range.
