There was a thread about what stain was best for an old deck, what is the best way to apply the stain? I am in the process of cleaning and re staining a large, multi section deck. Using Sikkens brand semi solid stain.
Someone suggested a pump sprayer, anybody tried that? Roller on a stick?

Heyseed,

I've never tried spraying a deck with a pump sprayer, but I twice used a pump sprayer to stain the deck on my hay wagon.

Frankly, I wasn't too pleased with it. The application was very uneven. In fact, I ended up rolling the surface after I sprayed it.

It was nice to be able to spray the underneither portion of the wagon, but that probably doesn't apply to your deck.

Personally, I'd never try pump spraying again, but maybe that's just me. I like brushes and rollers.

I used Sherwin Williams paint, turned out real nice and holds up way better than stain. Brushes and rollers as the tools.

I do not think I will ever stain a deck again.

I tried using a pump sprayer to treat a deck. I ended up replacing all the parts in the pump, so I won't be doing that again. Brush and roller. My personal preference is no stain at all, but somebody else vetoed that idea.
