Wife and I are headed to the Black Hills SD for a week ,leaving tomorrow. We are planning on staying in Pipestone Mn Sunday and Mitchell SD on Monday then on to Rapid City. Lots of time to see the sights along the way like Wall Drug (tourist trap) Pioneer Auto Museum (OK). We'll most likely come back to MN through Pierre SD then to Montevideo. Isn't there a hydro-electric plant to tour on the Missouri in Pierre or near there? Any other suggestions are welcome. Thanks

Murdo SD had an interesting open air museum when we went through there 20 some years ago. Early steam engines and rail cars, farm equipment, one of Elvis Presleys' Harley Davidson bikes, lots of other random stuff. The ladies weren't all that impressed, but my Father-in-law and I enjoyed it.

that's a nice run thru there , wall drugs has a great roast beef manhatten ,, but that was in 1994, I supposeit is a tourist trap ,, but if you pay attention to the history ,it all began with a large ice maker , and a pharmacist wife suggesting they should put up signs out on the road for free ice water ..,.you ouht to take in Yellowstone ...

National monument in Pipestone, Preehistoric Indian Village in Mitchell, Air &Space musuem along with a tour of Ellsworth AFB, the Badlands loop ect.

I live in Mitchell... The Corn Palace is under construction right now... so no tours but you can still stop and see it. In Kimball SD about an hour west, there is a tractor muesum that is a nice place to stop and look. The hydroelectric plant your thinking of in Pierre is the Oahe dam... you can look online for tour information. Oh, and when ur ready for super in Mitchell... go to Hardees just south of the interstate... ask for Julie the manager (and my better half). She will take good care of you!. If you would like some company, I would be more than interested in meeting up for a bit. Email is open. Have a great trip and be safe!

There is a Minuteman missile sight across I-90 (Exit 116) from Wall Drug. The missile is deactivated but still there. There is a plexiglass cover so you can see down into silo. We kinda stumbled across it but it turned out to be one of the more memorable things we saw. Hard to believe that something like that would be there. They give tours of the command center also, but it requires reservations and they are usually booked out a ways.

If you aren't in a hurry passing thru Sioux Falls, there is the Falls Park on the edge of downtown. There is also the USS South Dakota Battleship Memorial at Sherman Park on Kiwanis Ave.

Good luck!

Falls park in Sioux falls is nice. I'll 2nd Murdo. Don't just drive last the badlands, go through them.

Hayrack;

Do you know the Asbensens, LuRay and Loretta? They used to have a hog farm out near Mt. Vernon. She taught school in Mitchell. Makes a great cherry pie. We hunted pheasants on their place a few years ago. I think he's doing some kind of farm brokering now.

fergienewbee... I didn't go to school here. and the doesn't sound familiar... where are they at from Mt. Vernon?

Take the Badlands Loop near Wall. While in the BH see the Passion Play if it is still running. Drive through Custer Park and the Needles.Try the trail ride in the park. Slip down to Hot Springs and go swimming in the gravel bottom pool ( Evans Plunge) that is fed from warm springs. Guaranteed to cure any ailment you have LOL.
Go down the Homestake Gold mine in Lead/Deadwood. See the Saloon where Hickok died (No. 12) holding Aces and Eights. Now called "Dead Man's Hand in poker.
Try to beat the chicken in a game of Tic Tac Toe at Reptile Gardens. She never loses. She does get the center and first move, LOL.
Ridw the antique train from Hill City to Keystone and back.
Climb Harney Peak. Swim in Sylvan Lake.
Great place to overnight if you can get reservations in the Lodge.
Visit one of the caves, Wind, Wildcat. or other.
Trout fishing at Deerfield Lake and creek. Drive the gravel up to the Ranger Station on Lookout Mtn.
Try getting a cabin at Latchstring Inn near Spearfish. Also trout in Spearfish creek.
Instead of Mitchell, overnight at Cedar Shores Resort. Right on the river across from Chamberlain. Or Stay at the Hillside Motel in Chamberlain, Have owner (Allen) set you up with a half day walleye fishing trip leaves from there at dawn, one day license available.
