4440 vs 4450

I am wondering how these two John Deere tractors compare. Is there anyone out there who has owned both and could share an opinion on these two models. I would be interested in comparing fuel usage, maintenance, reliability, and durability.
Thank you for your help.

Although I personally haven't owned either model I think you'll find not a lot of difference between the 2 models. Both are known as some of the best tractors JD put their name on. BTW I've owned a 4255 since '93

Like John said biggest difference is the powershift trans, 15 speed vs 8 speed.

There are some other slight differences, 4450 has a gear driven water pump, 4440 has a belt driven one.
4450 was available with mechanical front wheel drive or mfwd. 4440 was available with hydraulic front wheel assist.

Al, I have run 4650, 4840,4640/4630,4430,With all things considered. The two tractors are basically the same except for the Trannys... 8 vs 15 speed.
the old Tried & True 8-Speed PS is just about Bullit-Proof! the only real draw back is the 1.5mph difference between 4th & 5th!!!
That was THE stumbling point for all JD PS tractors with the 8 Speed PS.
the 15 speed PS corrected that short comming! I do not and have not heard any thing bad about the 15 Speed PS. .........
So if Hrs are ruffly the same, price is the same go with the 15 speed SP 4450!
Hope this helps

Hard to find a better tractor than the 4440, but I wouldn't buy anything but a quad range. Nothing wrong with the PS but that isn't many gears. That's what the 4020 has and I am always wanting between gears. It annoys me that I have to stop to change ranges on my 4440 but that's just how they are. The new 7800 with the 19 speed PS is the cats meow. I'd go for 15 speeds all else equal.

Basically the same tractor but he JD 4450 has some refinements. The motors on the 50 series start better. The fuel consumption is a little better on the 50 series but not much better.

If both are a quad range then there would not be much difference at all other than a few horse power more with the JD 4450.

If the JD 4450 is a 15 sp. PS then that is one of the best tractors JD ever built, PEROID. The transmission works well and gives very few problems.

I own both. The 4450s will lug just a little better than the 4440.
