OT- Occupational licenses

Wondering how many on here (who are still working) have to have an occupational license issued by a guvment agency to be able to work? How much does it cost? Do you get anything of value, other than being allowed to do your job?

I'm a lawyer, must have license to practice- from Washington State Bar Assn., $355 a year. I get a magazine. WooHoo.

Wife is a dental hygienist. Annual license from Dept. of Health, $50. She gets nothin'.

Besides the CDL to drive the truck, I have a license to pick up milk on the farm. Issued by Michigan dept. of Ag. 50.00 every 2 years.

$40 a year to substitute teach. (And I have appropriate degrees.) Another $40 to teach driver education. Nothing but extra taxes, plane and simple.

In our township any person that does a job for any person for any amount of money, must have a license to work in the township. The fee is $125.00. The township calls it a tradesman license. A person hired to cut your grass is a tradesman.
It is all about the money!

My wife is a Nationally Certified Medical Assistant. Certification is $90.00 a year.
Certification is $90.00 a year.

Every two years we must attend a four hour lecture and pay $50 so we can apply fertilizer to our farm ground. Every 3 years we must attend a four lecture and pass a 50 question test plus $50 and $10
per year for each well so we can apply nitrogen in our irrrigation water. All in Nebraska

Restricted Use Pesticide Applicator Certification. $50 every three years. Used to have a license to sell Grade A milk.

Certified medical gas installer, and certified brazer and certified welder on stainless steel and carbon steel to work on QA level 1 in nuclear powerhouses. I've let them all lapse.

Steam Engineers License $85 a year. Electricians License $135. Plus yearly refresher classes to keep up on what the state has screwed with in the last year...
Both holes to throw money down to the city/state thru.

It's a tax under the guise of public safety.

Between my Master Plumbers, Real Estate,CDL, and CHL liscenses I spend plenty on fees and con ed classes every year.

We have researched selling eggs. Texas requires an egg liscense. I thought it was a joke. Not so much. To sell eggs or participate in the farmers market in town require a liscense permits and inspections.

Like I said. It's a tax.

One way or another, the government is going to get money to cover up their deficit management.

City of Phoenix had a stormy council meeting last night. Folks are upset that the city wants to put in parking meters in the bare dirt parking lots at the foot of the mountains where the hikers like to hike up the mountain. That's like tossing a cup of water on a forest fire when considering the budget deficit, but they'll take money anyway they can get it.

In Minnesota, an educator's license is renewed every 5 years. It was about $68.00 last time. However, had to complete an on-line class that cost $150. Also, it is necessary to complete continuing education units. It often requires a graduate level course- about $1000- to get enough of those. I think the 2013 renewal will be the last one.

State of Michigan Respiratory Therapist license is $150 every other year. Paramedic license $50 every three years and I believe the missus RN license is $50 every three years.

University Prof. Ph.D pretty much standard in the engineering/sciences and technology. Certainly not a license. More of a employment filter. Jim

CDL to drive the trucks and drilling rigs. Water well drillers license which I think is $100 per year and requires something like four hours per year of classes. The license is only valid while working for the named employer.

My father inlaw is a retired college engineering professor, he thinks PE is just a way of making a club.

I still hold a Missouri Teaching certificate for secondary mathematics. Common Core and "entitled" students combined to make me hang it up and raise hogs.

Michigan Master Electricians license--$50 per year, plus a 16 hour code school every three years at about $150. Wifes nursing license is also about $50, plus a number of Continuing Education Units every three years. We both worked too hard to get those licenses to let them lapse.

I never held a license and i never had a problem finding work as a self employed jack of all trades.;)

In my experience states with low taxes have higher fees/license. I guess it's a (shell game).... Cut taxes make people happy! Than raise fees/license when nobody is watching... With all kind of special interest exemption....

My wife also had to renew her license this year. She retired two years ago after teaching for 40 years in the same district. She has been doing substitute teaching since then. Instead of getting all the continuing education units she applied for the lifetime license instead. The difference in license is she can't to long term subbing, no more than 15 consecutive days in the same position.

MN, the land of 10,000 taxes still has fees for everything. I held a MN license to do insurance adjusting. Renewable every year. For a fee without retaking the test. Had I gone to work for an insurance company it wasn't required. But state tax levels and fees don't go hand in hand.

Arkansas medical license $200, Kansas $330 per year plus a bunch of continuing education of which most can be done free online. The 5 million liability insurance can get pricey. Mostly retired now, but still work a few weeks here and there to support my Farmall addiction.

Mike, I'm retired. In 73 I needed a license, which didn't cost me anything, except a BS and an MS in five years to get a lifetime license. I can't tell you what it costs today, over $150 to get a license and you have to pass a test to get a license, which is no longer a lifetime. Instead you have to go back to college and take more hours in the summer. So it keeps the state colleges busy.

40 years ago I saw licenses coming down the pipeline. There are many jobs that require a license. So you ask whay good are they. Well it keeps BUBBA form wiring a house in the City of Terre Haute. Everyone form tree trimmers, contractors, electricians, HVAC, barbers, plumbers, heavy equipment operaters, welders, and the list goes on, is required to be not only license or certification, some have to be Bonded to. Being a lawyer you know some need a bond to get out of jail too.

So who benefits? In my opinion, the consumer and the people in the business who want to run a legit business, pay taxes, pay a good wage and not be under cut by a fly by not night BUBBA, who wants work for cash only.

I see a licenses and certifications as a cost of doing business and a win, win.

I am a licensed (by Province of Ontario) Farm Equipment Mechanic. Big Deal. When I was in school thy said that the trade would eventually be regulated and you would need the license for the trade.Twenty five + yrs later and nothing has changed.
I also have a Forklift license and an air conditioning license. Never have to pull any of these cards from my wallet but the training is not a bad thing to carry around.

My opinion is that most of the licenses were issued as away of protection. It keeps the scammers from taking advantage of hard workers.

I was a licensed Mechanical Engineer in FL for many years. Dont remember the costs but I also had to have a mechanical contractors license which was expensive also. If I remember anything I think to costs were over $500 per year

Airline Captain....FAA ATP rating requires a 1st class medical every 6 months...$125/visit. Can't use the rating without a current medical. Also have 4 days of recurrent training every 9 months. Training covers new rules/regulations/security threats and 2 6 hour simulator sessions on emergencies normal and bad weather operations.
