spring/winter barley?

I have 13 acres still unplanted from this spring. Was supposed to be oats with trefoil underseeded. Most likely going to be short of oats for the grain mix for my cows, so I was thinking about seeding a winter variety of small grain, rather than direct seeding that field. Never tried wheat before, and I was told seed is real high $$ right now. Got a flyer from a seed company (that I've never done business with) that listed winter barley. McGregor, bred in WI. Never heard of that. Neither has anyone at the local feed mill where I usually buy seed. Do I just use the 'regular' barley seed the mill has on hand, or do I need to find some (like this McGregor) that is specifically listed as being a winter variety?

OK, thanks to google, I now know that there are spring, winter, and facultative (sp?) varieties. Now to find some available around here....

if you are looking for forage for cows try rye and turnips.they'll eat it off this winter and the rye will come back in the spring

Wanting it for grain. Can always use more straw, too. Not close enough to graze it, and no fence there.
