I have seen Hand clutches on Farmall M's but not H's. A guy has one for sale with hand clutch and says it is rare.So whats the deal why don't many H's have them if that is the case. thanks for any info.

I am in western, pa and I have seen several here. I guess the M was a more powerful tractor used for baling and combining, so they added the live clutch to them more often than they did the H's.

I think the hand clutch was an M&W live power setup. They basically disengaged one of the axles to allow the PTO to keep going. The control was a lever. IIRC.

The live setup may have had a hand clutch BUT the plain hand clutch was avaible for both H & M for one reason and that was a lot of farmers had foot-leg problems and operating a foot clutch was almost impossible. So options were the hand clutch conversion for them OR JD, MM or Case as I think those were the only tractors made with a hand clutch. And then it was discontinued on those makes as well. Do not know if you could shift gears with the AC hand clutch as it was designed for the PTO. Now those foot problems most the DR's can get the foot back usuable but not then. If you had lost a foot in acident then the artificial leg you could get was just enough to get around on but not the control needed to operate a tractor.

Probably because in the time period Hiesler and M&W were selling aftermarket hand clutches to stop movement of the tractor without the PTO or hydraulics stopping the M was the more popular tractor.
Late M,H with disc brakes and super series kits are more rare.

I think it was an H a local fellow has/had. I did some repairs to it a LONGGGGGGGGG time ago. Guy tore it up before he got home too. The lock nuts wanted to come off. Found out this guy was using the hand clutch to start off in road gear ! They were not meant to do that.

When someone has sumthing to sell, beware of the "RARE" description, usually its a sale gimmick to get more money from an unspecting buyer.
One thing to remember, just cause you haven't seen or heard of an item doesn't make it more valuable or nonexistent

Where did you dream up that answer?

The hand clutch on the Hs & Ms were to give a person live power to their hydraulics and PTO - that's why they disappeared when live hydraulics and LPTO were available on the 300 and 400.

Leroy isn't totally wrong, most tractor Mfgs.offered a hand clutch option instead of a foot clutch back in the 40s-50s.I don't think many were sold, but they were offered.(more std.treads then rowcrops were fitted tho.)

hand clutch option was so the non green guys would not feel so left out.

They are hard to find.I just sold one I had .I have had for a Super H also. Doesn't make them more valuable because they are hard to find in my opinion.

True Ih did build more H tractors than M tractors. it depends were you live as to which is more popular. here in Ne there were more M's than H's. I would guess I see three M's for every H.

Those hand clutches were sold by Tractor Supply and were not the live power everyone is thinking about.
