White Rust on Galvanized Metal/OT

Has anyone ever incurred having some galvanized sheets stacked together and then getting them ready to use and they have a white rust powder on them. These are sheets for a grain bin. Is there any spray on remedy that anyone knows of? I heard of maybe a white vinegar solution, but hate to get to carried away with something I thought I heard once..lol!

Anyway, if anyone knows of any home remedy, I would appreciate hearing about it. Thanks - Bob

I know Ospho has specific instructions for galvanized. But I belive you need to paint over top once the rust is killed. I just picked up a gallon off amazon so just starting to use it.

GALVANIZED - where appearance is important, apply one coat of OSPHO, let stand for approximately thirty minutes or until metal is etched. Flush with water, avoiding damage to adjacent areas; or wipe to a smooth finish, let dry, then paint. Where appearance is not important, one coat of OSPHO is recommended to thoroughly coat and etch the metal. Let stand overnight or until completely dry. Brush off any loose powder before painting.

Zinc is a very non "noble" metal and sacrifices itself to protect the underlying more noble metal, in this case the steel. Hence the reason for galvanizing. Water was threatening the steel and the zinc is protecting it.

I bought some old used galvanized one time that was rusty and had that white powder between sheets of tin. I pressure washed it and after 3 days sprayed it with Rust Iron Primer by Rustoleum. I then waited a week and then sprayed a rusty red Latex pant over the primer. So far its been 1o years and its looking good. The directions on Rusty metal primer says not to use it on new galvanized metal but if its weathered it will work. Its important to wait a week after applying the primer before doing the finish coat.
