3010 hydraulic oil getting HOT!

Hi,

I have a 3010 Diesel. I recently bought a wood splitter that runs off the tractor's hydraulics. I've never really done much with the hydraulics before except to raise and lower implements. Anyway, after about 30 minutes of running the splitter, I went to disconnect the hoses from the remotes and they were too hot to touch. I talked to a friend and he said I should check the hydraulic oil cooler up near the radiator to see if it was plugged up or something, but it's good. Now I'm thinking maybe I should try changing the hydraulic oil filter. Has anyone else experienced this? What else could be wrong?

Thanks,
Bret

If wood splitter has it's own control valve it's probably an open center valve which will heat the hyd oil on a 3010 when it's used to split wood. You need a cc conversion plug or a closed center valve.

Don't let how hot a hydraulic system feels to the touch fool you. Even a relatively cool hydraulic oil temperature of 150 F will make the fittings and hoses feel blazing hot, way too hot to touch for even a brief moment. Not saying that you for sure don't have a problem here but just that how it feels to the hand can be very misleading.

Tx Jim and David G,

Thanks for the replys. I don't know a lot about hydraulics, but I did some research and what you're saying makes sense. If I install a closed center conversion plug, will I need to also install a pressure relief valve, or will everything work fine if I put the hydraulics in float given that I'm running a John Deere which is a closed center system? (from what I've read).

If you can put in the closed center plug you will NOT need a relief valve as the tractor's system will keep stand bye pressure only at the valve. There will be zero FLOW until you open the valve. A relief valve can actually make the oil get hot too if it is set below your tractor's operating pressure.

An easy test is remove male tip from wood splitter valve return hose & aim hose in tractor hyd reservoir filler hole, start engine, engage tractor scv control lever on dash and if oil squirts out of hose with splitter valve in "neutral" then either splitter valve is open center &/or relief valve on splitter is set too low.

I have an infrared temperature gun, I would use it to see what temps you are really getting to, would also help in tracing where it is the hottest.
