How's The 2014 Farming Season Going?

Money's there in the cattle business, but haying in this perpetual spring weather is and has been about impossible.

As Randy said haying here in Michigan has been difficult. With all the cool wet weather white mold is hitting the soybeans pretty hard. There is still hope for a good corn crop.

Dairy and cattle doing great. Hogs also if not losing them when piglets. Grain just OK unless you sold a bunch much earlier and/or your crops are good. However with the latest farm bill giveaways and a little planning such as revenue insurance, nearly everyone will be OK.

Been a long year. Parents did get top dollar for a red holstein bull calf though, which is really shocking. Last year they sold a red one and didn't even get $10. Normally the reds don't sell good and the blacker the better at the market but right now, they'll pay for just about anything I guess.

Corn is poor at best. Not even 1/2 as tall as I'd like to see...

1 been a trying year for me with hay as well

I am with rrlund, 1st cut hay was horrible to get done. Getting very nervous as to weather or not I will get any 2nd cutting hay off. If I do not, I have about 10 or 12 horses that will have to go, one way or another. I have enough feed for the cows with my round bales.

Hope others are having better luck. Michigan has been terrible this "summer".

Great crop of calves, decent hay, short on second cutting, but third cutting is really starting to look good. Our corn is the best I can ever remember, and I shouldn't have to chop anywhere near what I have in previous years- however, what we combine ain't worth anything, so it's a toss up....

Agree with rrlund. Haying has been a bear - Need 4 dry days in a row, not getting them. Only got one field in so far that didn't get rained on. Have a couple of fields I want a second cutting off of. Been a bear. Wet weather has also hit a lot of potatoes with blight - heard of a number of fields plowed under because of it. Got my oats harvested - thrashed at steam show, but they were damper than I am happy with. Baled the straw, but those bales are awfully heavy. Going to keep them on the wagons for a couple weeks, until I'm satisfied they won't heat before I put them in the barn.

Constant rains in June-July held up spraying beans for 2-1/2 weeks--never saw so many tall weeds.. They look surprisingly good now, but reports of aphids have me a bit concerned now.

RayP, not trying to hijack the thread, but Wondering if you know when your episode with Dr Pol is going to be on. The new season started last week...
