Wanting to put in geothermal for daughter-son inlaw. No new furnace is needed, about 1800 feet of underground pipe at one dollar per foot. His Figures, New compressor and related equipment. We do backhoe work . Eight hundred feet of trench. One estimate 15 thousand. Other estimate bored underground turnkey system 14 thousand. Both said well you get a new water heater. Its supplied my REMC no cost to installer and not installed. Also both state Well you get thirty percent tax credit. Seem they want the 30% as extra profit. Maybe I am dreaming, however seams compressor and coil cannot be so much more that central air with air to air heatpump. Say double that of air to air. I figured 10 thousand tops. Ok I am an old tightwad . Let me have your take on this.

I would never dig it in, you can put it much deeper by boring it. A lot of geothermal that was dug in quit working last summer during the drought.

My wife and I built a new house on the family farm in 2012. The geothermal estimates were about like your's. I am 70 and the wife is 67. We decided that we would never reap the benefits. Also, the neighbor one farm away built in about 2000 and has geothermal. He just replaced all his pumps on the system to the tune of $5000.00. Ellis

You will pay that much and more to replace a furnace. How much were their utility bills using the geothermal? Probably a fraction of conventional bills. So I'd say your neighbor is money ahead.

Bill, the last thing you want to do is install a geo yourself. You definately run the risk of voiding the waranty.

My BIL has a HVAC business, installs geos. He has backhoe, but hires someone with an excavator to dig a deep pit, not trenches.

There is talk amoung people in the HVAC business that 410a is causing pressure related problems.

There is talk that engineers are working on finding a replacement for 410a.

Google life expendency of geo's and report back.

IMHO, there isn't anything better than making a superinsulated house.

You haven't seen my house on the north side of town. It's over 2100 + 24x24 garage + another 24x24 workshop. I keep house at 72 summer, 70 winter. Attached garage at 50. I got rid of gas and went with simple baseboard electric.

My fixed monthly bill is $135/mo.

We put geo in 6 years ago at a cost of 9000 then got a 2000 tax deduction. We have a pond and went with a pump and dump system. We have an 1800 square ft house in ohio_Our electric bill went up around 20 bucks a month to heat and cool the house.

We just put ours in new house last fall around 25,000 with all new furnace and everything new (all the bells and whistles) in the house, drilled wells. Cost $8.52 to cool the house in July (3000 sqft) should be about .75 cents a day to heat, Central MN

We looked into geo when we built about 10 years ago. Closed loop system was around $25,000. Too much for our budget.

Bill,
I found this to be an interesting read about 410a and how r22 is a more for giving freon. It has Angie's approval, for whatever that means.

I'll bet the farm that someone will jump on my but for this post, so if you do feel the urge, please post a better site. Thanks

"Ok I am an old tightwad . Let me have your take on this. "

I AGREE, you're an old tightwad AND SO AM I and why we are good friends..........

If you simply (with contractors approval) do the excavation (NO mechanical or hook up etc) work while the contractors does everything else I see that as a method to save money and no reason why you just digging should void the warranty BUT I HAVENT READ THE WARRANTY SO NO WARRANTY LOL

See you soon at Elnora

I got 5 qoutes about 2 yrs ago. For a closed loop system they said anywhere from 24k up to 36k depending on copper tube to plastic tube. I would love to have had one but way outside my budget. So put in a 95% effecient propane and an air to air exchange. After last years hard winter convinced wife to also get an old wood cook stove to put in the dining room. It will have a fire in it at least twice a day if not most of the day this winter. Now when I get home I will have about a month to cut split and stack wood in a wood shed I still have to build as well as salmon fishing and deer huntng.

JohnT,
Bill, cheap? Kim won't let me post just how tight he is?

I had to work with the man, not only is he cheap, he made me do his homework while he was going to night school. He has yet to give me part of his pension.

My brother-in-law won't sell a unit to someone who want's to install it. He has his reasons for digging a pit not trenches, not sure why. He also wants to keep his good name.

Kowing Bill, he will pinch a penny so hard, two nickles will appear.

If you read the 410a article, it explains why some people in the HVAC business don't like to install 410a units. I know one man in Terre Haute, who tell peoples he doesn't want anything to do with HP. If they insist, he gives them a bid that is way over priced. They find someone else.

I know a man who owns a large apartment complex. A few years ago, before 2010, he went to an AC supply house and bought all the R22 centerals they had. He's very glad he did.

I'm not 100%, but you may still be able to get enough parts to make a r22 geo. Recycled R22 is very expensive. Last time I looked 2 years ago, it was around $500 a bottle.

$36K. I haven't spent a total $36k on energy in the past 20 years, so how could spending 36k on a geo be a good idea even if it cuts my bill in half or a third?
