I am looking for a piston for a d2 caterpillar used piston is okay if in good condition 3.750 bore, part number is 5b2263, or 5b9349 I broke the skirt on mine when trying to get unstuck, my sleeves are in great shape like they were replace and never run, it was just stuck and I broke one skirt I am actually looking at welding the skirt, after all I am a welder, and I have welded other aluminum parts before

just use it as is, a small amount of skirt missing will not hurt a thing.
chamfer the edges and go.

I think my bore is std, if I get a piston 30, 0r 40 over size I can use one over size, I can machine piston to fit, but not more then 40 over size D2 caterpillar

so then welding the piece of skirt back on will be okay to do that, the piece is all but to the rist pin and half way around, I have tig welded parts before but not on a piston Thank for your reply

a picture would be easier to come up with a solution. over thirty years ago I was putting rings in a 900 case and one piston fell off the bench and broke he skirt off, like about 1" of it. it had some special pistons in it for a turbo and could not find any used ones. the tractor parts man said just use it as is, so I did and it run for about 20 years after. they are slow turning engines.

Might post on the "crawlers" section, someone might have one.

As long as those pistons are, I would think they would be somewhat forgiving in the skirt area. But then again, diesels are very unforgiving for shortcuts!

The piston should weld well, should you decide to give it a try. They're high quality aluminum. I would v the weld area, and intentionally tip the broken piece out slightly, then turn it back down to size. Take a good look at the finished product and see if you like it!

I welded a broken ring land on a compressor piston once. It worked fine, but a lot of difference in a compressor and a diesel engine!

I know Egge Machine can custom make obsolete engine parts, but then tend more toward automotive stuff. As such I don"t know if they can do what your needing. Even so, here"s a link to their site if you want to give them a try.

I have a set of 4 new 1H2808 Caterpillar pistons if you would be interested in them. They are 3.750 bore size. One shows stain from preservative but have never been installed. No rings or pins. E-mail is open if interested.
