Water Pump 5hp Engine question

I have an old Tractor supply 5hp briggs & Stratton powered pump, the engine has compression, but no spark need to replace the coil pack, anyone here happen to know for sure which coil pack to buy? I can not find any numbers on the coil or the engine, barely enough of the label to be positive it is a briggs. I do know it was new in the late 70"s to early 80"s and it does not have electronic ignition. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Leo

Not electronic? Have you checked the Points and Condensor?

If you need a coil you will likely need the info off the housing. If you can get this I highly suggest getting a pointless coil. Bout the same $$ and then you are done with the points.

Numbers should be on the shroud if it's a Briggs which would be my guess. Yes switching over to electronic ignition is the best route.

The numbers are stamped in the starter housing, and you will need the numbers for parts.

If I remember right they are on the side of the shroud that does not butt up against the fuel tank and carb. Such a good idea to put all important numbers on a piece of tin that is held on with three bolts. I have an engine here that my brother put a used shroud on. I need parts but have no clue what an of the numbers are.

Should be the same as any B&S lawn mower engine of that era. The later ones are electronic and will directly replace the old style. Should be lots of used ones around.

possibly just points behind flywheel. consider just about 20 dollar chip replacing points condenser then no more removing flywheel. gives as good spark as new electronig ingition

Thanks, I did not know it could be converted that easily. Definately going to get a new electronic coil so I do not have to pull the flywheel. This pump was left outside by my dad many, many times. It probably has less than 100 run time hours on it total. He never took care of equipment. I have a small project that needs water pumped out of right now, hoping I can get it running. Thanks!

your old coil is likely ok try the chip first the chip does not need electronic coil . The electronic coil is basically a standard coil with chip built in. put a little gas in spartkplug when you have spark to check if carperator is plugged up

I purchased a new electronic ignition coil, unbolted the old one, clipped the wire behind the flywheel, bolted on the new one, installed a new plug, pulled 3 times and it started and runs like a champ. Tonight I will test the actual pump on it. Very happy with the upgrade. I have never had to do this before, usually the small engines when they quit around here it is because there is a new vent hole in the crank case... Thanks guys. I did not bother with even looking for the "chip" as the old coil was so rusty I did not think it was worth trying.
